Smyly will start Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

He threw one inning out of the bullpen in Thursday's game, which essentially was his side session ahead of this start. Smyly will likely have to be pretty efficient with his pitches to log five innings in his first start of the season, which seems unlikely given the lineup he will have to face.

Smyly projects to be the Giants' third or fourth starter once play resumes, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Smyly signed a one-year deal with the club this offseason and is considered a lock to begin the season in the rotation. While his overall numbers were poor in 2019, Smyly logged a 4.45 ERA across 62.2 innings after joining the Phillies midseason while also notching an impressive 68 strikeouts. Perhaps more importantly, he proved he could stay healthy after failing to pitch a significant number of innings in both 2017 and 2018 due to injury. Now in a pitcher-friendly environment, Smyly could see improved results when the 2020 season resumes.

The southpaw will join the Giants' pitching staff after posting a career-worst 6.24 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 25 appearances (21 starts) with the Phillies and Rangers last season. The deal is worth $4 million over one year, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Smyly will likely compete for a role in the major-league rotation during spring training despite his struggles in 2019.

Smyly struck out 10 while allowing two runs on four hits with no walks across 6.1 innings during a no-decision against the Nationals on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old saved one of his best outings of the year for last, but unfortunately for him, it still didn't end in a victory. The runner he left during the seventh scored after he exited to tie the game, leaving him with a no-decision. Smyly still ended on a high note, but his overall season was ugly -- 4-7 record, 6.24 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 120 strikeouts in 114 innings.

Smyly (3-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over two innings Friday night against the Indians.

EDGE Analysis

Smyly struggled right from the start in this one, allowing two runs in the first inning followed by two more in the second prior to being lifted. Prior to Friday's rough outing, the 30-year-old southpaw has surrendered just four earned runs over his last three starts, though he sits with a 6.44 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 110 punchouts over 107.2 innings this season.

Smyly did not factor into the decision during Thursday's win over the Braves, lasting just four innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

EDGE Analysis

Smyly was mostly hurt by the long ball, serving up a two-run home run to Ozzie Albies in the first inning, then giving up another two-run shot to Adam Duvall in the fourth. The southpaw was facing the Braves for the first time this season and facing Albies for the first time in his career. Despite the brief outing, Smyly managed to record six punch outs, three of which came in the first frame. The slumping 30-year-old will take a 4.14 ERA and 1.29 WHIP into a rematch with Julio Teheran and the Braves during his next start on Wednesday.

Smyly (4-6) picked up the win Saturday, allowing four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings while striking out six in a 5-0 victory over the Mets.

The southpaw tossed 70 of 108 pitches for strikes en route to his third win, and third quality start, in nine trips to the mound as a Phillie. Smyly now sports a 3.93 ERA and 52:17 K:BB through 50.1 innings with his new club, and he'll look to come up big again in his next outing Thursday, at home against Atlanta.

Smyly (3-6) allowed one run on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts across 5.1 innings while earning a victory against the Reds on Monday.

EDGE Analysis

Even though he couldn't finish the sixth, this was still major improvement for the southpaw. Smyly had yielded 20 runs in his last 25 innings (7.20 ERA) and won just one of seven outings with the Phillies coming into the night. Of course, that's still better than what he was doing with the Rangers. Smyly is 3-6 with a 6.65 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 98 strikeouts in 94.2 innings with the Rangers and Phillies this season. He will pitch next at the Mets on Saturday.

Smyly allowed four runs on nine hits with zero walks and four strikeouts across 5.2 innings during a no-decision against the Pirates on Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

While he's pitching better with the Phillies than he did in Texas, Smyly still isn't posting great numbers. He's yielded fewer than four runs just once in his last five starts, and in that outing, he lasted just 3.2 innings. Smyly owns a 7.20 ERA in his last five starts since surrendering only one run in his first 13 frames with the Phillies. The veteran left-hander will next start at the Reds on Sunday, an outing intp which he'll carry a 2-6 record, 6.95 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 90 strikeouts, all across 89.1 innings.

Smyly didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Red Sox, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over 3.2 innings while striking out four.

EDGE Analysis

The southpaw tossed only 44 of 84 pitches for strikes before getting the hook, and while the light rain that fell throughout the game may have played a part in Smyly's inability to get the ball over the plate consistently, it's not like his struggles are anything new. He now has a 7.45 ERA through four starts in August (19.1 innings), but with the Phillies lacking alternatives for the rotation, he'll next take the mound Tuesday, at home against the Pirates.
