Drew Streckenrider was given the save opportunity in the season opener but Castillo was called upon to close out Saturday's game. The 28-year-old primarily served as a setup man after being traded to Seattle in mid-2021 and is in the mix to receive save chances. Time will tell who manager Scott Servais will rely on most in save situations.

Castillo and the Mariners agreed Tuesday on a one-year contract to avoid arbitration.

All of Castillo, Drew Steckenrider and Paul Sewald came to terms on deals to avoid arbitration, leaving the three primary candidates for saves out of the Seattle bullpen on the books for 2022. While splitting time between Tampa Bay and Seattle last season, Castillo delivered a 2.78 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 75:17 K:BB in 58.1 innings while converting 16 of 22 save chances.

The Mariners will use a handful of relievers to close out games again this season, Jesse Borek of MLB.com reports. "We'll have a number of guys who will finish off games for us," manager Scott Servais said.

Many expected Castillo to pick up more saves upon getting traded to the Mariners last summer, but the opposite occurred, as he converted only two save chances with his new team. Castillo still has good reliever skills, but he's competing with Paul Sewald, Drew Steckenrider and Ken Giles (elbow) for those precious save chances.

Castillo (5-5) got the win over the Athletics on Wednesday but allowed one run on one hit while striking out two over an inning.

The big right-hander is just 2-for-5 in save opportunities since joining the Mariners at the trade deadline, and with more reliable ninth-inning options on hand for manager Scott Servais, Castillo has primarily transitioned back into the seventh- and eighth-inning role he often filled during his time with the Rays. The return to a healthy dose of set-up work has mostly agreed with Castillo, who's posted a 2-0 record, 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 11:2 K:BB and five holds over 9.1 innings in September.

Castillo (4-5) recorded the win in a victory over the Red Sox on Monday, firing a perfect seventh inning during which he recorded two strikeouts.

The big right-hander was stellar after Logan Gilbert's six strong frames to open the contest. Castillo has been impressive since returning from a stay on the injured list due to a shoulder issue, as he's now posted scoreless efforts in four of the last five appearances while recording a pair of victories during that span.

Castillo (3-5) earned the win Wednesday over Houston. He allowed one hit and struck out three in a scoreless inning.

Castillo did his part to keep the game tied at 4-4 in the eighth inning, and Seattle rallied for the lead in the ninth to make him a winner.
