Diamondbacks placed SS Didi Gregorius on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with a right elbow sprain. Gregorius suffered a UCL sprain early in spring training, but is on track to return sometime around mid-April. He could resume playing shortstop in the next 1-2 weeks. The Diamondbacks are counting on him to take over for Cliff Pennington at shortstop at some point this season.

Didi Gregorius (elbow) could resume playing shortstop sometime between April 10-12. Gregorius only resumed throwing a week ago as he works his way back from a slight ulnar collateral ligament strain. The young infielder is slated to being the season at Triple-A Reno, but he should take over for Cliff Pennington at shortstop at some point this season.

Didi Gregorius (elbow) is slated to resume throwing this weekend. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson believes Gregorius will be ready to play shortstop by mid-April. The young infielder is slated to being the season at Triple-A Reno, but it shouldn't take him too long to unseat Cliff Pennington at shortstop.

Didi Gregorius (elbow) will make his Cactus League debut Thursday. Gregorius will be limited to DH duty for now as he works his way back from a slight ulnar collateral ligament strain. "It's going great," D"'acks manager Kirk Gibson said of Gregorius' progress. "At the same time, we're going to stay on the program. It's the right thing to do. He's exactly on schedule. He's had no setbacks along the way." Gregorius is slated to open the year as Triple-A Reno's shortstop.

Didi Gregorius played catch Saturday, the first time he's thrown since being shut down earlier this winter after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow. It's good news for the Diamondbacks and their 23-year-old shortstop, as it looks like he will avoid surgery. Unfortunately for Gregorius, the injury precluded him from competing for a starting role this spring. In the near term, Gregorius will throw from about 60 feet for the next week before the team decides where to go from there. He is still viewed as the team's shortstop of the future.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Didi Gregorius (elbow) is "probably two weeks away from starting a throwing program." The Diamondbacks' offseason acquisition is dealing with a "slight" UCL issue in his right elbow. While the injury isn't expected to require surgery, it means that Gregorius will not begin the season with the major league club. Arizona will likely go with Cliff Pennington as their primary shortstop, with Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald also seeing time there.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Tuesday that shortstop Didi Gregorius is dealing with a "slight" UCL issue in his right elbow. That's not what you want to hear after the Diamondbacks dealt Trevor Bauer in order to acquire him, but surgery is not expected to be necessary. However, the 22-year-old will not be ready for the start of the season.

Diamondbacks acquired SS Didi Gregorius from the Reds in a three-team trade. Gregorius' calling card is defense, as he's considered major league-ready in that regard and could open 2013 as the Diamondbacks' starting shortstop. While he's not a total slouch at the plate, there are questions as to how much he'll hit. The 22-year-old has batted .271/.323/.376 over five seasons in the minors. If Gregorius does begin the season in the majors, Cliff Pennington could spell him against left-handed pitching.

Reds recalled SS Mariekson Gregorius from Triple-A Louisville. Gregorius is being promoted as a utility infielder and doesn't figure to garner much playing time. He was already on the 40-man roster, so the Reds won't have to make a corresponding move.
