The Cardinals are treating Fowler as the top option to be their Opening Day right fielder, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

This has more to do with the $49.5 million the Cardinals owe Fowler over the next three years than anything else. Given that financial commitment and the fact he is one year removed from being a 2.5-win player and two years removed from being a 4.6-win player, it makes sense to give him the chance to earn everyday at-bats. Of course, if he picks up where he left off last season, when he hit .180/.278/.298 in 334 plate appearances, the Cardinals probably won't wait very long before turning to Tyler O'Neill. He missed the final two months of the season with a foot injury, but was cleared to resume baseball activities last week.

Fowler (foot) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

The move will end Fowler's regular season, as his 60 days will expire on Oct. 3. He'll end the year with a very disappointing .180/.278/.298 line and an uncertain role going into next season. Jose Martinez and Tyler O'Neill should continue to split time at right field for the foreseeable future.

Fowler will not need surgery on his broken left foot but will be forced to wear a boot for at least a month, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

That timeline leaves only a few weeks for Fowler's potential return. Whether or not he returns at all will depend on how quickly the foot recovers and potentially whether or not the Cardinals are still fighting for a playoff spot.

Fowler (foot) will be placed on the 10-day disabled list ahead of Saturday's matchup with Pittsburgh, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Fowler was initially diagnosed with a bruise, but after further examination, it was found that he fractured his left foot. He'll likely be forced to sit out for longer than the minimum, although a more concrete timetable for his return should be given in the near future. Fowler's injury opens the door for Tyler O'Neill to see regular playing time in the outfield.

Fowler left Friday's game against the Pirates with a left foot contusion, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Fowler appears to have avoided a significant injury, and he'll be considered day-to-day moving forward. He'll likely be reevaluated Saturday after arriving to the ballpark. Expect Tyler O'Neill to draw the start in right field if Fowler can't go.

Fowler is not in Thursday's lineup against the Rockies.

EDGE Analysis

Fowler will receive a breather after starting the past 10 games, during which he's slashed just .200/.368/.333 with two RBI and two extra-base hits. In his absence, Tyler O'Neill will man right field and bat third.

Fowler will start in right field and bat sixth Wednesday against the Reds, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

EDGE Analysis

Fowler has been on the bench just once in eight contests since the All-Star break and has begun to reward the Cardinals for their patience with him amid his season-long struggles. He turned in perhaps his best all-around game of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 win, going 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Fowler went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk in a loss to the Cubs on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Upon his promotion, interim manager Mike Shildt reportedly gave Fowler a clean slate on his dreadful first half, and the vote of confidence may be working. The veteran outfielder's numbers naturally have a very long way to go before achieving respectability, but he now has four multi-hit efforts in July, which equals his high in that category for any month this season. Shildt appears committed to affording Fowler fairly regular playing time, but it remains to be seen if the 32-year-old will be able to dig himself out of the worst slump of his long career.

Fowler will sit for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs.

EDGE Analysis

Fowler went hitless in the first game of the day. Harrison Bader will return from his knee injury to start in right field.
