Butler retired from baseball Tuesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Butler spent ten years in Boston's minor-league system, appearing in nine games at the major-league level, including a pair in 2018. That brief cameo earned him a World Series ring after the Red Sox were crowned champions in October. The 32-year-old will join the Diamondbacks as a bullpen catcher.

Butler was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Butler is out of options, so the Red Sox were forced to drop him from their 40-man roster in order to clear a spot for Blake Swihart, who was returned from the disabled list in a corresponding move. The 31-year-old catcher went 1-for-6 in a pair of starts for the Red Sox before being DFA'd. Butler will take a spin through waivers to determine where he'll head next.

Butler started Friday and went 1-for-4 in a 19-12 victory over the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Butler made his first start for the Red Sox since his contract was purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket last week. Sandy Leon had made six straight starts before getting the night off Friday. With a doubleheader Saturday, Butler will likely start one of those games, which figures to be his final start while up with Boston. Blake Swihart (hamstring) is expected to be activated for the Red Sox's two-game series in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Butler has his contract selected from Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Butler will take the place of Blake Swihart on the 25-man roster, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a hamstring injury in a corresponding move. Manager Alex Cora stated that Sandy Leon will catch the remaining three games against the Yankees this weekend, but Butler will serve as his backup and should see a little playing time while Swihart is on the shelf.

Butler was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. Acquired from the Red Sox in January, Butler went just 1-for-8 with one walk in six spring games, resulting in his name being listed among the Nats' first cuts from major league camp. The 28-year-old catcher has hit .248/.329/.416 in parts of five seasons at the Triple-A level.

Butler was traded to the Nationals late Tuesday night in exchange for pitcher Danny Rosenbaum, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox had dropped Butler from their 40-man roster last week, but the Nationals saw enough in his defensive abilities to pursue him via trade. He'll provide the organization with some catching depth at the Triple-A level.

Butler was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Wednesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. The move was made in order to clear a spot for reliever Craig Breslow, who officially re-signed on a one-year contract Wednesday. The 28-year-old Butler reached the majors for the first time last season and is strictly an organizational depth option. Expect him to go unclaimed off waivers.

Butler was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. Butler has earned a promotion pretty much by default, as he is the only other catcher besides David Ross and Christian Vazquez on the team's 40-man roster. The 27-year-old Butler hit just .241/.317/.350 with four homers in 83 games with Pawtucket and will merely serve as depth for Boston.
