Kimbrel (knee) has been diagnosed with a left medial meniscus tear and will undergo surgery Monday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports. He's been placed on the DL and is expected to miss 3-to-6 weeks.
EDGE Analysis
Kimbrel sustained the injury while running prior to Friday's game, and he'll now miss at least the rest of the month, and possibly a portion of August. The 3-to-6-week timetable is far from exact, but a more concrete estimate should be available following Monday's procedure. Boston has not announced who will take over as the interim closer, but Brad Zielger, who was acquired via trade earlier in the week, could be the top option.

Kimbrel injured his knee running before Friday's game and is awaiting the results of an MRI, the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager John Farrell admitted after Friday's game that Kimbrel will not pitch in the All-Star game, and the team expects to know more about the severity of the injury Saturday. Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) is also ailing, so Koji Uehara would be the obvious option for saves for however long Kimbrel is out. It seems safe to rule Kimbrel out for Saturday and Sunday's games, considering he has already been ruled out for the All-Star game.

Kimbrel, who was torched for four runs in a non-save situation Tuesday, requested to pitch Wednesday night regardless of the score, Kevin Dillon of Mass Live reports. "He made it clear," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He wanted to be back on the mound [Wednesday]. With only 12 pitches thrown [Tuesday], he is fresh and wanted to make sure we got an opportunity to work through some things."
EDGE Analysis
Boston's All-Star closer has not been good in non-save situations this season and wanted to put Tuesday night's debacle behind him. He entered Wednesday's game with Boston holding a five-run lead over Texas, and while he was better -- no runs allowed, no hits, two strikeouts -- he did put two batters on via the walk after getting the first two hitters out. The Red Sox have an off day Thursday, so Kimbrel should be available if a save opportunity presents itself Friday night against the Rays.

Kimbrel allowed four runs on three hits and a walk without getting a batter out in Tuesday night's 7-2 loss to Texas.
EDGE Analysis
With Boston trailing by a run heading into the ninth inning and the middle of their order due up in the bottom of the ninth, manager John Farrell turned to his closer in an non-save situation to keep the game close for an attempted comeback. But Kimbrel would have none of that in an outing that furthered a disturbing trend: Boston's closer has a 6.75 and 1.65 ERA in 14 non-save situations, spanning 13.1 innings, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. And including the last three seasons, his ERA in non-save situations has swelled to 5.13. That suggests a lack of focus. Farrell admitted he might rethink whether to use Kimbrel in these situations, but others in the bullpen were not available to pitch Tuesday and he needed Kimbrel.

Kimbrel secured his 17th save in Friday's 5-4 victory by working around a hit and a walk in the ninth inning.
EDGE Analysis
Despite allowing two baserunners, Kimbrel needed only 15 pitches overall to get out of the ninth. He tempted fate by walking Mike Trout to start the inning, and then surrendering a ground-rule double to Daniel Nava with two out. However, he managed to induce a groundout from C.J. Cron, who'd hit a grand slam earlier in the contest, to seal the victory. It was the veteran closer's fifth consecutive successfully converted save opportunity.

Kimbrel (0-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout while lasting just 0.2 innings in the top of the tenth against the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Kimbrel just didn't have it going, giving up a Jose Abreu two-run double that ultimately won the game for Chicago. Despite an ugly 0-3 record, he has generally been his usual self with a 2.57 ERA and minuscule 0.79 WHIP.

Kimbrel struck out the side in a perfect inning Sunday against the Mariners to capture his 16th save of the season.
EDGE Analysis
The hard-throwing righty last blew a save on May 28, but he has followed that with seven scoreless outings and has allowed just two baserunners during that span. Kimbrel now boasts a strong 1.98 ERA and a minuscule 0.70 WHIP this season and has reclaimed his spot as one of the top fantasy relievers in the game.

Kimbrel picked up his 14th save as he worked around a hit to record a scoreless 10th inning in Tuesday's win over the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
The hit was just the 12th Kimbrel has allowed in 23.1 innings, but it didn't matter a bit as the Red Sox closer has bounced back from his last blown save to record three straight scoreless outings. Kimbrel's current 2.70 ERA would be the worst of his career, but his 0.87 WHIP would be his best mark since 2012.

Kimbrel logged his 13th save in Saturday's 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays, giving up only one hit in his one inning.
EDGE Analysis
The 28-year-old closer enjoyed his second straight scoreless appearance, after having blown a save opportunity on May 28 against this same Blue Jays squad. Kimbrel has been largely effective as expected this season, converting 13 of 15 save opportunities and striking out 35 over 22.1 innings.

Kimbrel (0-2) blew his second save of the season in Saturday's 10-9 loss to the Blue Jays, surrendering four hits and two earned runs over 1.1 innings. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
It was a rare late-inning failure on the part of the Red Sox closer, who surrendered a game-tying RBI single in the eighth to Jose Bautista that plated Devin Travis, which Kimbrel had inherited from Junichi Tazawa. However, the was fully responsible for what transpired in the ninth, where he gave up a single to Justin Smoak, an RBI double to Russell Martin, and a game-winning infield single to Travis. The 28-year-old had successfully converted seven consecutive save opportunities prior to Saturday, and hadn't given up an earned run since April 24 versus the Astros.
