Spangenberg will start at second base and bat second in the lineup Sunday against the Rockies, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Although the struggles of Jedd Gyorko have opened up at-bats at second base, it's typically been Yangervis Solarte who has gotten the nod ahead of Spangenberg to see extra starts. Spangenberg will finally get a chance to state a case for further playing time while simultaneously slotting into a favorable spot of the order ahead of mashers Matt Kemp and Justin Upton. It might be enough to make him a worthy value play for daily gamers.

Spangenberg started at second base in place of Jedd Gyorko on Friday for the second consecutive game, going 0-for-4 in the loss to the Dodgers. He took advantage of his first start Thursday, going 2-for-4 in Coors Field, but wasn't able to replicate that success against Zack Greinke and company. The second base job for the Padres might evolve into some sort of platoon between Spangenberg, Gyorko and Yangervis Solarte.

Reports Wednesday indicated that manager Bud Black was considering giving Spangenberg a start at second on Thursday afternoon. Spangenberg is not in the lineup Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Spangenberg has fared well in nine games since his call-up, recording nine hits, including two homers, in 29 at-bats. He'll sit Saturday but should continue to see at least semi-regular time over the final weeks, likely with occasional opportunities atop the order.

Spangenberg tallied a single and his first career stolen base in four at-bats during Sunday's loss at Colorado. After accumulating at least 25 stolen bases in each of his first three professional seasons, Spangenberg was more shy on the basepaths in 2014, totaling 16 steals in 25 attempts between Double-A San Antonio and short-season Eugene. Meanwhile, since he joined the Padres when rosters expanded, he's recorded a base knock in five of six outings, slashing .353/.389/.706 with two homers, five RBI, and two runs in 17 at-bats. With two starts apiece at second and third base, his versatility warrants attention in deeper formats during the final month of the season.

A concussion cost Spangenberg, the 10th overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft, more than two months earlier this season, but he went on to bat .331/.365/.470 in 66 games upon his return to Double-A San Antonio. With the Padres in evaluation mode, Spangenberg could get an extended look over the final month.
