Mullee (elbow) was non-tendered by the Cubs on Friday and is now a free agent, the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports.

The Cubs then claimed him off waivers from the Yankees after the season, but apparently they either did not like his medicals or simply saw a better way to use the roster spot. His numbers at Triple-A prior to the injury were excellent (0.99 ERA, 45:11 K:BB in 36.1 innings), so another team will likely give him a shot if he can prove he is healthy.

The righty was terrific in the minors though, working to a 0.99 ERA over 25 appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, so he could get a shot to make the Opening Day roster in 2017.

The 28-year-old has already undergone Tommy John surgery twice so any kind of injury is always alarming, but the pitcher reported his shoulder and elbow felt fine. A further update on his status should become available if Mullee is forced to miss any time.

Mullee was recalled by the Yankees on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old reliever will take the roster spot previously held by Kirby Yates, who was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Mullee has been dominant at Triple-A this season, posting a .52 ERA across 34.1 innings of work.
