Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that Clint Barmes' new one-year deal with the Pirates is worth $2 million. Barmes just finished his two-year, $10.5 million deal with the Pirates and will take a paycut to stick around as a utility player. The 34-year-old hit just .211/.249/.309 with five home runs and 23 RBI over 330 plate appearances this past season, but plays quality defense and will serve as a backup to Jordy Mercer in 2014.

Barmes doesn't bring much with the bat, but he consistently rates among baseball's best defensive shortstops year after year.

MLB.com's Tom Singer writes that Pirates general manager Neal Huntington will "push hard" for a new deal with Clint Barmes during the club's five-day exclusivity window. The Pirates plan to use Jordy Mercer as their regular shortstop next season, but they want to bring back Barmes and his steady defense as insurance. Barmes has hit only .221/.263/.316 the past two seasons for Pittsburgh.
