Beck (undisclosed) was removed from Thursday's game against the Rangers, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

He was called upon to relieve Reynaldo Lopez but was then hit by a comebacker before giving up a home run to Nomar Mazara. Beck was replaced by Mike Pelfrey and the White Sox announced that they will have an update on him once more information is made available.

Beck has returned to action for the White Sox after suffering a minor knee injury last weekend.

EDGE Analysis

His 3.23 ERA and 1.17 WHIP are solid marks, but his 22:13 K:BB in 30.2 innings illustrates his lack of upside, and likely regression over the rest of the season.

The ball off the bat of Oakland's Khris Davis caused enough pain that the White Sox felt it would be prudent to remove Beck. However, the severity of the injury is unknown. Beck doesn't normally enter in high-leverage situations, but has a 3.21 ERA in 28 innings of relief this season.

Beck allowed one run on two hits with no walks and a strikeout over 1.1 innings in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Padres.

Beck is used mainly in middle-to-long relief situations when the White Sox are trailing and will be called on to pitch multiple innings. Five of his six appearances have lasted longer than than three outs. With three bullpen regulars on the disabled list, Beck will remain on the roster until some of those injured bodies return.

Beck will look to improve on 2016's underwhelming performance with the big club. Last season he posted a 6.39 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over 25.1 innings (25 games). Lefties were particularly challenging for Beck as they put together a .385 batting average against the 26-year-old.

The 26-year-old's biggest hope of cracking the Opening Day roster were dwindling after being passed over by many of the White Sox's top starting pitching prospects, but Beck punched his ticket to the minor leagues by allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits in just 7.1 innings pitched this spring. The 26-year-old does have some major league experience to his name as well as a bit of success against Triple-A hitters, so he could wind up in the Windy City later this season if other members of the White Sox pitching staff falter.

Beck will be one of several relievers looking to fill out the White Sox bullpen in 2017.

Beck, a minor-league starter who began to transition to the bullpen in 2016, had a couple of stints in Chicago's bullpen last season, but was barely perceptible on fantasy radars. Lefty batters raked against him (1.115 OPS) and his control was putrid (6.0 BB/9). The team is pretty much set in the rotation and have several recent draftees and prospects that have moved ahead of Beck in terms of starting depth. If he's to head north with the White Sox in April, it will be as a reliever, but as one that can pitch to hitters on both sides of the plate.

The White Sox have optioned Beck to Triple-A Charlotte after their game on Sunday against the Braves.
