Whisenhunt was sitting 96-97 mph during a simulated game Thursday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Delos Santos notes that the readings were courtesy of Trackman, so it's a legitimate velocity increase for Whisenhunt, who averaged 92.6 mph with his four-seamer last season. It will be interesting to watch whether the southpaw is able to carry the velocity spike into Cactus League play and the regular season, as it could help spur a breakout. Whisenhunt entered spring training likely on the outside looking in for a spot in the Giants' rotation after holding a 5.01 ERA and 16:12 K:BB over 23.1 innings covering five starts in 2025.

Whisenhunt (back) allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out two across three innings in Triple-A Sacramento's 4-2 loss to Round Rock on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Whisenhunt was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 31 due to a back strain but appears to be nearing a return to the big leagues. He made his first rehab appearance against Round Rock last Tuesday, giving up three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings while tossing 25 of his 39 pitches for strikes. The left-hander stretched out slightly Sunday, throwing 46 pitches (30 strikes). If the 24-year-old returns to the majors ahead of the regular-season finale Sunday, he'll likely replace Trevor McDonald or Kai-Wei Teng in the rotation.

Whisenhunt (back) is expected to throw a couple innings in a rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Sacramento, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Whisenhunt was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 31 due to a back strain but won't require a lengthy stay on the shelf. After completing a bullpen session Sunday that incorporated all of his pitches, Whisenhunt will make an abbreviated rehab appearance Tuesday before potentially rejoining the Giants next weekend. San Francisco has been getting by of late with Kai-Wei Teng and Carson Seymour as its back-end starters, but Whisenhunt could replace either pitcher in the rotation once he's activated.

Whisenhunt (back) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
It appears to be the first time Whisenhunt has thrown from the bump since he landed on the 15-day injured list at the end of August with a back strain. Whisenhunt is eligible for activation this weekend, and it's possible he'll return then if the Giants don't think he needs a rehab start.

Whisenhunt isn't expected to miss extended time due to the back strain that landed him on the 15-day injured list Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
Whisenhunt is eligible for activation Sept. 12, and he could have a good shot at returning on that date or close to it. The rookie left-hander holds a 5.01 ERA and uninspiring 16:12 K:BB over 23.1 frames covering five starts with the Giants this season.

The Giants placed Whisenhunt on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a back strain, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
The left-hander presumably suffered the injury during his start Wednesday against the Cubs, during which he picked up the win after allowing three runs across five innings. Whisenhunt will be eligible to be reinstated in mid-September, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point. Kai-Wei Teng was called up from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move and will take Whisenhunt's place in the rotation Monday at Colorado.

Whisenhunt (2-1) earned the victory over the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three batters over five innings.
EDGE Analysis
All three runs Whisenhunt allowed came on a second-inning homer off the bat of Nico Hoerner. Following that long ball, Whisenhunt settled in to retire nine of the final 12 batters he faced. The southpaw completed five frames for the first time over his past three starts, though he has yet to complete six innings in any outing this season. That partly has to do with a lack of control -- Whisenhunt has issued multiple free passes in all five of his MLB appearances on the campaign and has a poor 16:12 K:BB through 23.1 frames. Nonetheless, he has a 2-1 record and seems set to remain in San Francisco's rotation, with his next start scheduled to take place in Colorado next week.

Whisenhunt is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Cubs at Oracle Park.
EDGE Analysis
Optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 12 after turning in a 5.02 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB in 14.1 innings through his first three MLB starts, Whisenhunt received a call back to the Giants less than two weeks later when an injury to Landen Roupp (knee) reopened a spot in the rotation. Whisenhunt took the hill Friday in Milwaukee and kept the Brewers off the board through the first three frames, but he struggled in his second turn through the batting order and was ultimately tagged for two earned runs on four hits, two walks and one hit batsman across four innings before being lifted from the contest. Despite Whisenhunt's poor numbers in the big leagues to date, he'll receive at least one more start while the Giants are short on quality alternatives at Triple-A to replace him in the rotation.

Whisenhunt didn't factor into the decision against the Brewers on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one over four innings.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie left-hander cruised through the first three frames, allowing only two hits, before unraveling in the fourth as the Brewers pushed across two runs, including one on a wild pitch. Whisenhunt has struggled to find his footing at the big-league level, posting a 4.91 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB across 18.1 innings this season, but looks to remain in the rotation until Landen Roupp returns.

The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his start against the Brewers on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Whisenhunt officially joins the 26-man roster, taking the place of Landen Roupp (knee). The 24-year-old Whisenhunt made his MLB debut in late July with three starts for the Giants, posting a 5.02 ERA and a 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings before being sent back down Aug. 12. Whisenhunt's numbers at Sacramento weren't much better, as he tallied a 4.37 ERA and 92:32 K:BB across 103 innings.
