Vargas allowed one run on one hit in 1.2 innings Sunday against the Astros. He struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas has been a liability out of the Seattle bullpen of late, giving up at least one run in three of his last four outings. The right-hander has mostly worked as a middle reliever and in low-leverage situations in 2025, and that's unlikely to change at this stage of the season while the Mariners try to clinch a playoff berth. Through 74 frames, Vargas has a 4.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 51:23 K:BB with 14 holds while converting just one of his eight save opportunities.

Vargas gave up two runs on three hits and one walk in the seventh inning during Sunday's 11-4 win over the Athletics. He struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas was brought on with the Mariners in possession of a commanding 11-1 lead, so his rough showing didn't play much of a factor in the outcome of the game. The right-hander will likely remain being used primarily as a middle reliever and low-leverage arm, given Vargas owns a 5.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB over his last 21 innings since the start of July.

The Mariners activated Vargas from the paternity list.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas was unavailable for the Mariners' final three games before the All-Star break while welcoming a new addition to the family, but he will be back in the bullpen for the start of the second half. The 25-year-old has posted a 3.43 ERA and 32:19 K:BB over 44.2 innings this season.

The Mariners placed Vargas on the paternity list Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The All-Star break begins Monday, so it's likely Vargas will have the full weekend off for personal reasons before returning to the team when the schedule resumes. Seattle recalled Tayler Saucedo from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Vargas recorded two outs in Wednesday's 5-2 defeat to the Diamondbacks. He struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
After giving up four runs in Monday's loss to Arizona, Vargas was able to rebound with his second scoreless outing among four appearances in June so far. The 25-year-old right-hander has worked as one of Seattle's high-leverage arms in 2025, as he has eight holds through 32.1 innings, but Vargas has gone just 1-for-4 on save opportunities to go with a shaky 1.55 WHIP this year.

Vargas allowed two hits and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Athletics.
EDGE Analysis
The Mariners likely wanted to avoid turning to regular closer Andres Munoz after his 28-pitch outing Monday. Vargas had 34 pitches in Monday's game, but he had not pitched for five days before that appearance, and he was able to get the job done. Vargas has a 2.60 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB over 17.1 innings this season. He's not an established reliever in the majors yet, but the Mariners have given him some high-leverage looks. Vargas has earned four holds, a 1-1 record and a blown save over 13 appearances, though he's not a serious threat to Munoz's status as the closer.

The Mariners optioned Vargas to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings across six spring training games, and he will ultimately miss out on a spot in the Mariners' Opening Day bullpen. The 24-year-old righty turned in a 7.23 ERA and 2.11 WHIP across 42.1 innings with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate last season, and he will certainly need to improve upon those numbers before he gets called up to Seattle.

The Mariners acquired Vargas and Seby Zavala from the Diamondbacks in exchange for Eugenio Suarez on Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas posted a 5.79 ERA and 7:4 K:BB over 4.2 innings with Arizona and a 7.02 ERA and 36:32 K:BB across 42.1 frames at Triple-A Reno in 2023. While the control problems are worrisome, Vargas has a huge arm and could develop into a late-inning weapon if he can throw enough strikes.

The Diamondbacks optioned Vargas to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas was brought up from Triple-A after Tyler Gilbert was placed on the paternity list, and he'll now return to the minors due to Gilbert's return Wednesday. Vargas was sent to the minors in April after beginning the season with three earned runs across 4.2 frames, and he's recorded an 8.74 ERA and 2.61 WHIP across 22.2 Triple-A frames since then.

The Diamondbacks recalled Vargas from Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
The hard-throwing right-hander will provide Arizona with a fresh arm in the bullpen for Sunday's series finale with the Pirates after Tyler Gilbert (personal) -- who covered three innings in relief in Saturday's 3-2 win -- was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move. Vargas has previously made five appearances for Arizona this season, giving up three earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven over 4.2 innings.
