Shaw pitched the eighth inning Wednesday, allowing a hit and striking out one Tiger en route to his 22nd hold of the season.
EDGE Analysis
The setup man seemed well on his way to a career-worst campaign when August opened, but Shaw has turned things around over the past month and a half. Through his last 19 appearances (18.2 innings), the 29-year-old owns a 2.41 ERA and 24:3 BB:K while converting all 10 of his hold opportunities.

Shaw, who is having one of his worst seasons in years, has been plagued by a major drop off in the effectiveness of his slider, SB Nation reports.
EDGE Analysis
Now in his seventh MLB season, Shaw owns a career-high 3.51 ERA while on pace to notch fewer than 20 holds for the first time since 2013. Last year, the setup man owned a career-best 25.1 percent strikeout rate in large part because he induced swinging strikes on 20.6 percent of his sliders. This year, that number is down to 10.8 percent. Shaw's slider is missing the late break that made the pitch so effective in recent campaigns, and without that good movement, he's simply not as useful as he once was in deep formats.

Manager Terry Francona said the acquisition of Joe Smith will allow the skipper to take away some outings from Shaw in hopes of keeping the latter fresh, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Francona may be happy to lighten the load on Shaw, who's on pace to log a career high for innings pitched, but the news certainly isn't good for fantasy owners. The 29-year-old's high-leverage role has him in line to near 20 holds while nabbing a handful of wins this year. If Smith interferes with that, Shaw's fantasy value certainly takes a hit.

Shaw (3-4) retired a single batter to collect his third win of the season during Saturday's victory over the Blue Jays.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw entered the game and retired Kevin Pillar in the top of the 10th inning, and then Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to seal the win. With a 2.76 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 7.5 K/9, Shaw is a serviceable fantasy asset in deep leagues, but if closer Cody Allen were ever bumped from his job, Andrew Miller would likely be next in line for saves and not Shaw.

Shaw (2-4) was charged with his second blown save of the year, and took the loss Wednesday after allowing two runs on a pair of hits. He retired two batters via strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
After an error by first baseman Carlos Santana, the reliever was tagged for a two-run double by Buster Posey that propelled the Giants to a 5-4 victory. In six July games, Shaw has surrendered six runs on eight hits and two walks, raising his ERA more than a full point during the month.

Shaw wrapped up his first half of 2017 with a 2.81 ERA, 11 holds and two saves over 42 games.
EDGE Analysis
Since becoming an Indian in 2013, Shaw has made more appearances (341) than any other MLB reliever. He's on pace to log 20-plus holds for a fourth consecutive season, making him roster-worthy in deeper leagues that reward such performances. However, Shaw's 7.8 K/9 is well below last year's 9.3 mark, and the 29-year-old's 3.89 BB/9 is a career worst.

Shaw collected his second save of the season after retiring a single batter in the ninth inning of Wednesday's win over Baltimore.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw has been pitching in high-leverage situations all season, and he entered Wednesday's game after Dan Otero pitched himself and the team into trouble. Cody Allen has a firm grasp on the Cleveland closer job, and Andrew Miller is likely also ahead of Shaw for save opportunities, so it's probably wise not to overreact to Shaw notching Wednesday's save.

Shaw threw a wild pitch, allowed a single and struck out the only hitter he retired Tuesday in Colorado.
EDGE Analysis
It was quite an eventful outing for Shaw in a meaningless 11-3 ballgame. His wild pitch allowed Charlie Blackmon to take third base before DJ LeMahieu recorded an RBI single that was charged to Boone Logan. Shaw hasn't been quite right lately, as the right-hander has yielded four runs on seven hits over his last 5.2 innings. Regardless, the 29-year-old's ERA still sits at a career-best 2.42 through 26 contests in 2017.

Shaw logged a pair of walks and strikeouts over an inning of work Monday en route to his seventh hold of the season.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw is off to a fine start in 2017, appearing in a team-high 17 games while managing an admirable 2.00 ERA. He ranks second among Tribe relievers in innings (18), and the right-hander has stranded four of the five runners he's inherited during the campaign. Shaw's 1.6 K/BB is way outside the norm for the 28-year-old, but his 8.0 K/9 is on par with his career average. He's also picked up a save and one win thus far.

Shaw faced just two batters, walking one and striking out the other, en route to his third hold of the season Thursday in Minnesota.
EDGE Analysis
Albeit early in the campaign, Shaw hasn't been overly impressive through his first eight games. His 6.1 percent strikeout rate and 63.6 percent strand rate are well off the marks he's posted in previous campaigns. However, Shaw's .338 BABIP is a stroke of bad luck, and owners can expect the numbers to even themselves out in due time.
