Labastida was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lavastida served as catching depth early in the year but hit just .083 with three walks and four strikeouts while appearing in six games. Luke Maile (hamstring) will likely be recalled by the Guardians to serve as the No. 2 catcher behind Austin Hedges.

Lavastida has made the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lavastida will officially serve as Cleveland's backup catcher to begin the 2022 campaign since Luke Maile (hamstring) is expected to require an IL stint early in the year. Lavastida hasn't yet made his major-league debut, but he slashed .289/.380/.456 with nine home runs, 51 RBI, 50 runs and 16 stolen bases across 84 minor-league appearances last year.

Lavastida is expected to be on the Opening Day roster as the Guardians' backup catcher, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Luke Maile (hamstring) will probably get that job when healthy, but it'll be Lavastida's to begin the 2022 campaign. The catcher spent time at three levels of the Guardians' minor-league system last year, posting a combined .289/.380/.456 slash line with nine home runs, 16 stolen bases, 51 RBI and 50 runs scored across 84 games. He still looked a little overmatched in a cup of coffee with Triple-A Columbus, but the 23-year-old should benefit from regular at-bats in the minors later in the season.

Lavastida was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.
EDGE Analysis
As things stand, Austin Hedges is the lone big-league catcher on the depth chart, so Lavastida figures to get a chance to earn a spot next season. He has a strong hit tool and some power but will likely open the year at Triple-A.

Cleveland promoted Lavastida from Double-A Akron to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Lavastida gets his second promotion of the season after beginning the 2021 campaign at High-A Lake County before moving on to Akron in late July. Over the past month with Akron, the 22-year-old backstop slashed .300/.380/.463 with a 9.7 percent walk rate and a 21.5 percent strikeout rate in 23 games.
