With rain in the forecast for Washington, D.C. ahead of Thursday's 4:05 p.m. ET first pitch, Nimmo could be hoping for a postponement to give him an extra day to heal up before the Mets play their first game.

Mark Canha and Starling Marte both have experience playing center field, so the Mets should have no issue filling Nimmo's spot if he's forced to miss time. Dominic Smith would likely start in left field if that happens, though that job could also go to J.D. Davis on Opening Day against lefty Patrick Corbin if the Mets are comfortable using Davis in the outfield, something which didn't happen last season.

Mets manager Buck Showalter said Monday that Nimmo won't play in either of the team's final two Grapefruit League games due to a stiff neck, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

The Mets are hopeful that by holding Nimmo out of the lineup for the next two days, he'll show enough improvement to be ready to make the start in center field in Thursday's season opener in Washington. If Nimmo remains out for Opening Day, a spot in the outfield could open up for Dominic Smith, as Mark Canha would likely shift over from his normal spot in left to cover center field for Nimmo in that scenario.

Nimmo (thumb) will start in center field and bat leadoff in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins.

Nimmo's sore thumb proved to be only a minor concern, as he missed just two days as a result of the injury. Though he's getting the nod in center field Tuesday, he could see most of his action at one of the two corner-outfield spots in 2022 after the Mets picked up Starling Marte in free agency this offseason.

Nimmo (hamstring) has been activated off the 10-day injured list and is starting Friday against the Phillies, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
