Hand picked up his second save of the season despite allowing a run in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Mets.
EDGE Analysis
After converting his first save Wednesday, manager Andy Green expressed that Hand wasn't taking over for Brandon Maurer as the team's closer. Despite the skipper's reluctance to make an official change, the dominant southpaw appears to be the pitcher to own for saves in San Diego until the results prove otherwise. The 27-year-old owns a 2.00 ERA and 11.7 K/9 over 27 innings this season.

Manager Andy Green said Hand, who earned his first save of the season Wednesday night, is not the Padres' new closer, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
While Green decided to give regular closer Brandon Maurer the eighth and Hand the ninth, he confirmed that won't necessarily be the norm going forward. However, the skipper did say he'll look to give both Hand and Maurer opportunities on a situation by situation basis. Hand currently owns a 1.80 ERA and 0.92 ERA with 33 strikeouts through 25 innings (21 games) this season, so if Maurer doesn't bring down his 6.88 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, Hand could take over the ninth inning.

Hand threw a perfect inning en route to his fourth hold of the season in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.
EDGE Analysis
The Padres blew a late lead Thursday, but it was no fault of the dominant lefty who retired two of the three batters he faced via the strikeout. Hand's 1.37 ERA is being held together by an unusually-high 93.3 percent strand rate, resulting in a 3.35 FIP. Even if he were to regress a bit, the 27-year-old would remain a reliable option in holds leagues while he continues to breakout as a reliever.

Hand picked up his second hold of the season in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks. He tossed 1.1 perfect innings while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran southpaw technically recorded five outs Thursday, but Austin Hedges dropped a third strike in the seventh inning and allowed A.J. Pollock to reach base despite striking out. Hand has picked up right where he left off last season when he developed into a dominant bullpen arm. With nine strikeouts and just one hit allowed through seven innings, Hand is a premier middle relief option in holds leagues and should be rostered if he wasn't already.

Hand tossed a clean inning in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Dodgers.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran lefty needed just 11 pitches to set down the top of the Dodgers' order in the ninth inning, sealing the win for San Diego. It wasn't a save situation, but Hand should see a handful of hold opportunities after posting career-best numbers as a reliever last season (2.92 ERA, 111 strikeouts and 21 holds).

Manager Andy Green said that Hand will make the Opening Day roster as a member of the Padres' bullpen.
EDGE Analysis
Hand had his best season as a professional last season in San Diego (2.92 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 21 holds), something that many pitchers experience when becoming a Padre. It was more than just ballpark factor that contributed to his newfound success, as his strikeout rate (11.2) and FIP (3.12) experienced tremendous growth while the rest of his metrics remained relatively constant. The biggest change Hand made last season was relying on his curveball more than he has in year's past. He threw his bender 31.4 percent of the time last season compared to 15.1 percent the year prior. Hand will look to repeat his 2016 success and should be a decent source of holds in either a seventh or eighth inning role this year.

Hand agreed to a one-year deal with the Padres on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
EDGE Analysis
The terms of the agreement were not made public. Hand officially transferred to a relief role last season and was quite successful, posting a 2.92 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 111:36 K:BB in 89.1 innings out of the bullpen. He should continue to pitch in high-leverage spots this season, but Brandon Maurer figures to open the year as the team's closer, so saves won't be readily available.

Hand has allowed seven earned runs across 9.2 innings in the month of June, bringing his ERA up to 3.89 for the season.
EDGE Analysis
Hand has continued to strike out plenty of batters this season, as he has an 11.4 K/9, but his struggles with control remain an issue. His walk rate is currently 13.5 percent, contributing to his opponent on-base percentage of .339. However, Hand's endurance has been valuable to the Padres, as he frequently throws two or more innings out of the bullpen.

Hand threw a scoreless inning, allowing two walks and striking out three in Wednesday's matchup with the Cubs.
EDGE Analysis
Hand's production has been highly variable this season as he's given up earned runs in six of his 16 appearances. The southpaw strikes batters out as he's collected 18 K's over his 14.1 innings of work but he still allows too many hits and walks as he's accumulated a 1.74 WHIP. The 26-year-old will look to improve upon his peripherals in his mid to late inning relief role as the 2016 season continues.

Hand was designated for assignment Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
With a wave of roster cuts looming, the Marlins decided Hand would be best-suited for the minors. After issuing eight walks and allowing 10 runs over 11 innings this spring, one could hardly blame them.
