Parnell (elbow) was activated from the disabled list Thursday. This was widely anticipated to take place sometime this week and now there is confirmation that he will be available for Thursday's game against the Giants. Look for Parnell to start out pitching in the middle innings, but he could pitch his way to the setup role with New York sometime this summer.

Parnell will be active "in the next few days," per manager Terry Collins, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports. Parnell is expected to come off the DL by the end of the week, but he won't step into the closer's role. Collins confirmed that Jeurys Familia will continue to hang onto the role, so Parnell may have to settle for the setup job, if he can prove himself worthy.

His 30-day rehab clock is expiring, hence him joining the Mets before being activated. He can also refuse a demotion since he has five years of major league service time. Still, once he is activated it will be to be used in a middle relief role, or perhaps a setup role if he pitches well. Jeurys Familia has a pretty firm grip on the closer role in New York for the time being.

Parnell is scheduled to appear in a game at Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday, and if everything goes well, he'll likely return to the Mets on Wednesday. However, it remains to be seen whether he'll immediately be trusted in high-leverage positions. In fact, it's quite possible the Mets will ease him back into action considering he's yet to debut at the major league level this season after registering 22 saves in 2014.

Parnell is nearing the end of the 30-day window allowed for rehab assignments, so it will soon be decision time for the organization. Considering the length of time he's been out of the majors, mixed with a diminishing fastball velocity, Parnell is unlikely to see high-leverage situations in the short term. With Jeurys Familia collecting 16 saves in 17 chances this season, the closer job likely won't be up for grabs any time soon.

Parnell's (elbow) fastball velocity was just 90-93 mph in his rehab outing at Double-A Binghamton on Saturday, Marc Carig of the Newsday reports. Parnell allowed a solo home run in his inning of work. But his inability to regain his prior velocity is growing more concerning by the outing. Parnell likely will remain in the minors a bit longer though the 30 days allowed for his rehab stint is also close to ending.

Parnell (elbow) struggled for the second straight appearance at Double-A Binghamton, allowing three runs on three hits, with two walks in one inning Wednesday. Parnell has allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks in 1.1 innings his last appearances. The thought prior to these two outings was that Parnell could be back with the Mets shortly. These poor efforts likely mean he will spend more time in the minors.

Parnell (elbow), who seemed to be inching closer to joining the Mets, regressed again Saturday, allowing five earned runs on five hits and two walks while recording just one out. Parnell was attempting to pitch on back-to-back nights for the first time this season and as seen by the results, it did not go well. Parnell took the loss Friday, allowing a run in an inning of work and after retiring the first batter he faced Saturday, the next seven reached base. Parnell will need several more rehab appearances before a promotion is considered.

Manager Terry Collins indicated that Parnell's (elbow) velocity reached 94-95 mph in his last rehab outing at Double-A Binghamton, Jared Diamond of Newsday reports. Considering Parnell's earlier issues with his velocity sitting in the low 90s, it's a great sign for him that it has increased once again. If he can sustain that velocity in another rehab outing or two, it's possible he'll rejoin the Mets at some point within the next few weeks.

Parnell (elbow) threw a scoreless inning for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. Parnell recentky moved up a level after making several appearances for High-A St. Lucie. His velocity is starting to rebound back toward the 94 mph range he had pre-surgery. Parnell likely will make a few appearances for the B-Mets before getting moved up to Triple-A Las Vegas and possible return to the Mets.
