McKinney signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees on Saturday, Max Goodman of SI.com reports.

McKinney's big-league debut came as a Yankee back in 2018, but he's failed to make much of an impact there or elsewhere across parts of five seasons. In 263 career games, he's hit just .206/.277/.387. Things went even worse for him last season, as he played 23 games for Oakland and hit .096/.158/.173. It's hard to envision him playing a major role at the big-league level this season.

McKinney owns a .306/.387/.533 slash line with 21 extra-base hits (nine doubles, four triples, eight home runs) and 37 RBI across 48 games with Triple-A Las Vegas since May 15.

McKinney was booted off the 40-man roster back on May 9 after furnishing an abysmal .096/.158/.173 slash line across 57 plate appearances with the Athletics. However, the 27-year-old has found new life in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, where he's also posted a pair of stolen bases and 31 runs over his 48-game stint with the Aviators in addition to the numbers previously cited. McKinney has only marginally cut down his strikeout rate to 27.0 percent from the 28.1 percent figure he'd posted against big-league arms, but he has upped his walk rate to 10.8 percent after drawing free passes at a 7.0 percent clip in Oakland.

The Athletics designated McKinney for assignment Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

He'll be pushed off the 40-man roster in favor of Luis Barrera, who was also called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take McKinney's spot on the 26-man active roster. McKinney had managed a lowly .096/.158/.173 slash line while striking out in 28.1 percent of his plate appearances through the first month of the season, so he could have a tough time earning a spot on another organization's 40-man roster. If he goes unclaimed off waivers, McKinney will be assigned to Las Vegas.

McKinney is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.

EDGE Analysis

McKinney will head to the bench after going 0-for-7 while starting in both of the Athletics' last two contests. Ramon Laureano (suspension) is one week away from being cleared to make his season debut with Oakland, and McKinney looks like one of the top candidates to lose out on at-bats in the outfield once that happens. McKinney is sitting on a miserable .111/.180/.200 slash line through 50 plate appearances this season.

McKinney entered Wednesday's win over the Giants as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and laced a double in his one plate appearance.

EDGE Analysis

McKinney was on the bench for the second straight night, but he came through nicely with his second extra-base hit of the season. The 27-year-old has found success at the plate elusive since the start of the season, and despite Wednesday's productive plate appearance, McKinney could find playing time increasingly sparse, especially once the switch-hitting Jed Lowrie returns from the COVID-19 injured list.

McKinney will sit Friday against the Rangers.

McKinney has done very little with his chances thus far this season, hitting .118/.189/.206 in 37 trips to the plate. Mickey McDonald will be the right fielder Friday.
