The 28-year-old spent the entirety of 2016 with Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk, where he batted a solid .291 while posting a 21:53 BB:K ratio in 306 at-bats. Despite the success he enjoyed in the minors, Perez seems destined to fill an organizational depth role in 2017 given that Welington Castillo and Caleb Joseph are in line to take the vast majority of the reps at the major league level.

Perez was acquired by the Orioles on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports. Perez is still expected to start his season at the Triple-A level, as the Orioles have a bunch of other options behind the plate to cover for Matt Wieters (elbow), who should be ready at some point in April. The 26-year-old Perez doesn't hit for much power and is allergic to walks, so he doesn't have much offensive upside to speak of.

Perez signed a minor league contract with the Rockies and is expected to be invited to major league spring training, MLB.com reports. Perez, who turns 26 next week, hit .292 in 62 games with the Cardinals' Triple-A Memphis affiliate last season, but drew just four walks in 248 plate appearances and has posted a double-digit home run total just once in seven minor league seasons. While he'll get to attend spring training with the big club, it will likely take an injury or trade for him to get an opportunity in the backup role.

Perez was designated for assignment Monday. The Cardinals needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, and now Perez will pass through the waiver process. Look for him to continue providing organizational depth at catcher in 2015.
