Abreu, who has been out since June 6, is dealing with a muscle issue in his right shoulder, Mark Sanchez of the New York Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
It was unclear initially what forced the hard-throwing 21-year-old to the DL, and a shoulder ailment is not the most encouraging news. Abreu had a sparkling 1.84 ERA at Low-A this year before moving up to High-A, where he worked to a 5.09 ERA in six starts. He remains without a firm timetable for a return and will likely be treated with extreme caution.

Abreu was placed on the 7-day DL at High-A Tampa with an undisclosed injury.
EDGE Analysis
He left his last start on June 6 after two perfect innings, so while an injury had not manifested itself in diminished results in the box score, he clearly suffered some sort of injury in that start. The big news with Abreu this season has been his added velocity, a fairly common occurrence for young pitchers who join the Yankees' organization. He has touched 100 mph with his fastball this season. Abreu posted a 3.82 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 41:12 K:BB in 37.2 innings across Low-A and High-A prior to suffering the injury, but he had been much more successful at Low-A than with Tampa.

Abreu struck out a career-high 11 batters over 5.2 innings Wednesday for Low-A Charleston, and occasionally touched triple digits on the radar gun, MiLB.com's Alex Kraft reports. He gave up two hits while issuing zero walks against Low-A Augusta.
EDGE Analysis
This was the 21-year-old's best start as a pro, as the zero walks were just as impressive as his 11 strikeouts, considering the control issues he has had in the past. Abreu now has a 17:1 K:BB in 9.2 innings in the Sally League, and will likely be seeing a promotion to High-A in the coming weeks, as he is simply not being challenged by hitters right now. The Yankees may have once again worked their velocity-adding magic, as Abreu had been a guy who could touch 98 before getting traded to New York, and now it seems he can pump 100 mph gas when he needs to.

Abreu was traded to the Yankees on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
The 21-year-old was included in a package with fellow right-hander Jorge Guzman that sent Brian McCann and cash to Houston. Abreu is one of the better pitching prospects in the Astros system, and he proved that by posting a 3.50 ERA and 10.4 K/9 in 14 starts and seven relief appearances with Low-A Quad Cities. That being said, he still has a lot of control issues and needs to prove he can maintain his stuff over the course of a full season, but his ceiling still sits very high.
