Wainwright allowed four runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts across four innings in a no-decision against the Pirates on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander was not sharp at all, walking three of the first five hitters he faced. He struggled to get through four innings and only avoided the loss because the Pirates imploded in the final few frames. It's a long season, but at 37 years old, it's probably fair to wonder what exactly Wainwright can supply to owners this season. His average fastball velocity now sits below 90 MPH, and last season, he only pitched 40.1 innings because of injuries.

Wainwright struck out five and allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in a split-squad loss to the Astros on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
So far, so good for Wainwright this spring, as he lowered his exhibition ERA to 2.51 across 14.1 innings with Friday's performance. The veteran right-hander has been experimenting with a splitter in an attempt to refresh his repertoire and keep hitters guessing during what will be his 14th major-league season. Wainwright's body of work this spring is certainly encouraging when considering he's coming back from an injury-shortened 2018 in which he posted a 2-4 record, 4.46 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across eight starts.

Wainwright fired four scoreless innings in a 9-3 Grapefruit League loss to the Astros on Saturday, allowing two hits and one walk. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran's performance, which saw him reunite with battery mate Yadier Molina in the latter's first game behind the dish this spring, was one of the bright spots of the day for the Cardinals. Glenn Sattell of MLB.com reports that Wainwright's fastball consistently resided in the high 80s on the radar gun during the outing, but in a nod to his ongoing work with his splitter, he notably retired former teammate Aledmys Diaz on a 69 mph version of the breaking pitch. "I probably threw about 10 of them," Wainwright said. "I got an out, got a couple swings and misses. Got foul offs. If I missed, I missed down with good action. So I think it's a pitch I'm going to use a lot."

Wainwright, who allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk across three innings in a 9-5 Grapefruit League loss to the Cardinals on Monday, has been experimenting with a split-finger fastball this spring, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. "If you're as old as I am, you've got to continue to reinvent the wheel sometimes," Wainwright said. "I'm always looking for that next pitch that's going to win me the [National League] Cy Young [Award]."
EDGE Analysis
Despite the fact Wainwright has 352 major-league appearances under his belt, he's not above trying to expand his repertoire going into his 14th season. The right-hander has been trying to emulate the type of splitter thrown by Hall of Famers Jack Morris and Bruce Sutter, and he deployed it successfully for a strikeout of Nick Castellanos with two men on in the first Monday. Wainwright still ended up throwing more traditional fastballs during his three-inning stint and was disappointed with his location. "My fastball command was terrible today," Wainwright said. "I was just having such a hard time. I just gotta keep going. I commanded my fastball very good the first game. Today, I did the opposite."

Wainwright will start Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander already got his spring off to a good start with a pair of scoreless frames last Tuesday. Wainwright will look to continue making his case for a spot in the starting rotation after an eight-start 2018 campaign that was cut short by elbow problems.

Wainwright threw a pair of scoreless innings in his spring debut Tuesday against the Nationals.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright was brought back by the Cardinals on a one-year deal in October and is set for his 15th season with the club. His role in the team's rotation isn't guaranteed, as he's posted an ERA of just 4.77 over the last three seasons, but Carlos Martinez's struggles with a shoulder injury increase his chances of breaking camp as a starter.

Wainwright signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
The terms of the deal remain unknown, though Wainwright will be back in St. Louis for a 15th season. The veteran right-hander missed a majority of the 2018 season with an elbow issue, logging just eight starts (40.1 innings) and posting a 4.46 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 40:18 K:BB. Wainwright owns a 4.77 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 7.4 K/9 over the past three seasons, so he doesn't figure to carry much fantasy value in 2019 even if he does beat out some of the Cardinals' younger arms for spot in the Opening Day rotation.

Wainwright (2-4) allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over five innings, taking the loss Friday against Chicago.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright didn't get off to a smooth start, giving up two runs in the first inning followed by one in the fourth and another in the fifth. He'd exit in a 4-0 game after tossing 61 of 94 pitches for strikes. Friday's loss was a big blow for St. Louis, a team that's still making a push for a chance at the wild-card game for two games remaining in the season. If the Cardinals do end up making the postseason, Wainwright could serve as a valuable piece of the rotation given his playoff experience.

Wainwright settled for a no-decision as he was tagged with four earned runs over 6.1 innings Saturday against San Francisco, allowing eight hits and no walks while striking out six in the Cardinals' 5-4 victory in 10 innings.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright gave up only one run through the first six innings, but ran into trouble in the seventh as he gave up four hits before being removed. The 37-year-old has made just seven starts this season, compiling a 4.08 ERA and 1.50 WHIP along with a 33:17 K:BB.

Wainwright will start Sunday against the Dodgers, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander's second consecutive start was confirmed by manager Mike Shildt on Tuesday, and it could well be a pivotal one. The Cardinals currently hold a two-game lead over the Dodgers for the second National League wild card spot, and Sunday's contest will mark the finale of a four-game series between the clubs. Wainwright struggled early in his first start back from the disabled list Monday, but he wrapped up the outing by retiring eight straight batters.
