Hill is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Wednesday against the Giants. The former All-Star was named to a bench role days prior to the opener, but Hill ended up starting the first two games for Arizona, once at third base and once at second. Chris Owings will return to the keystone Wednesday, but it seems manager Chip Hale may try to find opportunities for Hill moving forward, perhaps with the hope of building up his trade value.

Hill will start at second base and bat second Tuesday against the Giants. Hill has a 14-for-30 career mark (five extra-base hits) against Ryan Vogelsong, Tuesday's starter for San Francisco, so it makes sense manager Chip Hale would give him the nod over Chris Owings. The 33-year-old Hill has now been in the starting for the Diamondbacks' first two games but is expected to be a bench player.

Hill got the start at third base on Opening Day with lefty Madison Bumgarner on the mound and went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hill is expected to back up at second and third base and should find himself on the bench Tuesday. The veteran could also be moved in a trade by the Diamondbacks at some point if their young players acquit themselves well.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale is toying with the idea of starting Hill at third base for the Opening Day start against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants, the Arizona Republic reports. Hill is going to be a utility infielder at second and third base, perhaps even shortstop, and the notion here is that Hale doesn't want Jake Lamb facing Bumgarner. Complicating matters is that Nick Ahmed got hit by a pitch on the hip and had to leave over the weekend.

Hill will open the year in a bench role, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed will start the year at second base and shortstop, respectively. Hill's struggles last season -- he limped to a career-worst .654 OPS in 133 games -- carried over to spring ball, with the 33-year-old going just 10-for-53 (.189 average) with one extra-base hit (a double) and 10 strikeouts. It's always possible Hill could work his way back into a starting job, if Ahmed or Owings struggle for a prolonged stretch.

Hill is 4-for-13 with a pair of RBI (1:2 BB:K) through five games this spring. He's the favorite to handle the Opening Day nod at second base for the Diamondbacks, while Chris Owings (shoulder) is likely to end up at short. Hill played through a wrist injury last season, which may have been a big factor in his decline in 2014. Just one season removed from a .291/.356/.462 line in 2013, Hill may offer up late-round value on draft day.

Hill is competing to serve as the Diamondbacks' starting second baseman during spring training, Fox Sports Arizona reports. "The best guy plays every day," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "If Aaron Hill comes in and he is back to Aaron Hill that his baseball card says on the back . . . If he's the best guy at that position, he'll be our second baseman." Last season, Hill played through a wrist injury that led to a significant drop in his OPS. In addition to being healthy as spring training has started, Hill shed five pounds during an offseason workout regimen this winter. Defensively, his skills have also shown signs of tarnish, but it's expected that the Diamondbacks will be more inclined to shift their defenders under new manager Chip Hale, which may help slow that decline. At a significantly reduced price, Hill offers some value given his potential to bounce back assuming better health in 2015.

Hill (finger) appears to be atop the depth chart at second base for the Diamondbacks following the offseason trade of Didi Gregorius, the Arizona Republic reports. Hill's OPS dropped by more than 150 points last season, as he struggled to hit for power and showed diminished plate discipline. Shoulder and finger injuries may have driven a significant portion of that regression, however, and there's reason to believe that the improvements to the Arizona lineup could enable him to be a source of value in the form of improved counting stats if he sticks as the team's everyday second baseman.

Hill (finger) remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals. Hill hasn't been in the starting lineup since back on Sept. 18, and with the Diamondbacks well out of contention, they'll continue to rest the second baseman. Even when healthy, Hill was starting to lose playing time to the likes of Jake Lamb and Chris Owings, so his role with the organization in 2015 is currently a bit unclear.

Hill (finger) is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals. Hill was hoping to play again this season after dislocating his pinky Monday, but he is running out of chances to do so.
