Hi, just wondering if any leagues restrict trading of unused draft picks. Part of me thinks it should not be allowed due to potential fairness issues (people trading away valuable picks for potentially little in return or less in return than they would take if they were actually using the pick). Then the rest of me says the draft picks are assets that the teams should be able to trade even when they can't use them (due to already maxing out their rosters with keepers, etc.).
I'm really not sure what is "right" in this case, so interested to hear opinions.
Trades that are massively unbalanced should not be allowed in general.
It's up to the commish where to draw the line, and that can be tricky. In both my leagues, I saw trades this offseason that were pretty unbalanced when only looking at fantasy value, but still made sense for both involved teams. With such trades, I will usually not commish-execute them, but leave them open for 24 hours, allowing other owners to voice any concerns.
I don't think trading away an unused draft pick is foul play. The trade should still be balanced, though.
Also, if you set the number of keepers in your dynasty league below the roster minimums, and clear non-keepers at the start of the draft, then owners will be forced to use at least their early picks in the rookie draft. I have never seen a pick going unused before the 4th round of a rookie draft, and at that point, picks do not have too much value anymore.
