Hey guys,

I've read several posts about roster minimums and I'm still a little confused about whether I should have it on or off, or off during the draft and pre-season but on during the season. It is our leagues first time using Flea and we love all the customisable options, but this one has me a little stumped.

During the season, we want our bench split between offensive and defensive players to ensure there is a little waiver action at the skill positions during the season. We start a full defence of 11 players, have a bench of 12, and the roster minimums are set so that teams will have 2 DLs, 2LBs and 2 DBs on the bench. Obviously, during the season we want to ensure that all managers carry 6 defenders on the bench and meet the requirements--does this mean I MUST have the enforce roster minimums on? Or will they still be required to have 6 defenders on the bench even if it is off?

A wrinkle to the above is that I don't want a trade to be invalidated because of a roster minimum. Let’s say a Team A sends 2 DLs to Team B for 1 DL; Team A would be under the minimum DLs. Would having the enforce roster minimums on prevent the trade? Or would the trade go through and the manager would then be able to add another DL from waivers to meet the minimum requirements?

During the draft, I want to give teams some flexibility to take additional offensive players, which would naturally leave them short on defence. The idea is that a manager would have pre-season to evaluate his offensive players, guard a little against injuries, or take a punt on a few offensive rookies, who can be placed on the practice squad post-draft. This means they would have an illegal squad during and after the draft due to not meeting the roster minimums on defence, which we are okay with. However, we want to ensure that by week 1 each manager has a fully legal squad. Therefore, they would have to cut the extra offensive players, or move rookies to the practice squad and pick up defenders from waivers.

Does this mean I’m best have the enforce option OFF during draft, so teams can draft to the maximum and ignore the minimum, but ON during the season, or will ON prevent trades as detailed in the example above?

It is a little confusing as to what the enforce option actually does, as I read on one post that it does not prevent the trade going through, therefore violating the roster minimum, but it does then prevent any other roster moves until the squad is legal again. If this is the case then it seems like ON is the way to go as it will not prevent trades but will forces teams to have a legal squad. However, I am unclear as to whether this would prevent a team from drafting an illegal squad.

If the enforce option is OFF, does this mean a trade would go through and a team could keep and illegal squad and make roster moves throughout the season?

Thanks

John

Hello John,

First off, thank you for the kind words -- we are so happy to hear you are enjoying the site thus far!

Having "Enforce Roster Minimums" set to Yes means that owners with illegal rosters won't be able to make roster moves until the roster issue is rectified. This includes free agency additions, waiver claims and trades.

Having "Enforce Roster Minimums" set to No means they won't be barred from transactions being processed if they are in an illegal state.

The minimum threshold doesn't go away if the setting is set to No, and the owner can still end up with an illegal roster if they drop below the minimum, but there just won't be ramifications like invalidated trades if this setting is set to No.

Please shoot me back an email if you need any additional clarity!

Thanks. That is how I thought it would work, but I saw a post here by Fleafounder which seems to contradict it a little.

fleaflicker.com

From that post it seems to indicate that if I enforce roster minimums' during the season, a trade would go through where it invalidates the roster but then the team would not be able to carry out further transactions without first making their squad legal.

Alternatively, if I have it set to off then a trade would go through and a team.would not be forced to fixed their illegal roster and could maintain and illegal roster.

I think we'll likely have to have it on during the season so that o don't have to check squads all the time. I was hoping it would not affect trades. If it foes affect them then ill look at a manual workaround.

Thanks for the help.

John

Hi John,

The penalty goes into effect right after the roster becomes illegal, so that previous post you shared is accurate -- sorry I didn't make that explicit in my previous email.

If your roster was already illegal and you attempted a trade, it would invalidate. However if your roster was fine going into the trade, it should be an issue -- you will just get prohibited from further transactions right afterwards.

Please reply to my last email if you have any additional questions or feedback to share! Thanks :)
