Legwand announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday.

The first-ever draft pick for the Predators in 1998, Legwand had a decently successful career in Nashville with his most successful campaign coming during the 2006-07 season when he posted 27 goals and 36 assists. He finishes his career with 228 goals, 390 assists, and 551 penalty minutes.

Legwand has not scored since Nov. 27, and has just eight points in 39 games thus far this season.

Now a wily veteran who's counted on for his defense and leadership, the biggest surprise this season may be how much Legwand has played this season, dressing in 39 of the Sabres' 42 games. The 35-year-old is a fourth-line player with no fantasy value.

Legwand's tally represented Buffalo's lone goal in a tough 2-1 loss. The veteran center picked up a loose puck from the end boards and slid it backhand past Jake Allen. The 35-year-old has five points in 18 games this season and has long lost his relevance in fantasy.

Stepping in for the veteran will be Johan Larsson, who has a higher offensive ceiling to take advantage of some shaky Toronto goaltending. Legwand's best days are behind him and has a minus-3 rating in four games.

Legwand was traded to the Sabres on Friday. The Sabres will send Legwand and netminder Robin Lehner to Buffalo while Ottawa sends back the No. 21 overall pick in the 2015 draft. Legwand appeared in 80 games last season, notching nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points in an average of 13:54 of ice time. The 34-year-old is slated to make roughly $3 million next season.

Legwand is slated to be scratched from the Sens' lineup Wednesday against Montreal. Legwand, who notched 27 points in 80 regular season games, has not recorded a point in three playoff tilts thus far. He'll be replaced in the team's Game 4 lineup by Zack Smith.

Legwand captured an assist and went plus-3 in Thursday's win over the Canadiens. Legwand has settled into a bottom-six role with the Senators this season, where his talent level is better suited at this stage in his career. He's only managed 24 points on the season and has only a goal and two assists since the start of February, but he remains one of the Sens' top faceoff specialists. Unfortunately, that won't translate to much fantasy value.

Legwand collected a pair of assist in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Coyotes. Legwand now has seven points (one goal, six assists) in his last seven games, which qualifies as his best stretch of production all season. During that run, he was a healthy scratch for two games, so there's no guarantee he'll maintain a lineup spot despite his ample production. The inconsistency of Legwand's ice time doesn't make him particularly enticing as a fantasy option.

Legwand will rejoin the lineup for Saturday's game against the Coyotes, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports. A healthy scratch the past two games, Legwand will rejoin the lineup due to an injury to Alex Chiasson (undisclosed), who is considered day-to-day. Legwand has seven goals and 12 assists in 45 games this season, with four points in his last five appearances.

Legwand will be a healthy scratch for Thursday's game against the Stars, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports. Legwand had managed to compile five points in his last six games despite seeing spotty ice time, but he's now been a healthy scratch for two straight games. The Senators seem satisfied with the play of young centers Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Curtis Lazar, so until either player begins to struggle, Legwand could remain a fixture in the press box.
