Timonen was the first Blackhawk to be handed the Stanley Cup by captain Jonathan Toews following Monday's Game 6 victory over Tampa Bay, and he confirmed his retirement following the game, ESPN reports. Timonen went without a point in 34 games (16 in the regular season, 18 in the playoffs) after being acquired by Chicago, so he clearly didn't have much fuel left in the tank. Thus, after winning his first Stanley Cup in a career that's spanned parts of three decades, Timonen said "that's it" on Monday, closing the books on a 15-year span during which he played in 1,108 games, recording 117 goals and 454 assists.

Timonen will be back in the lineup for Wednesday's Game 4 against the Lightning, Brian Hedger of NHL.com reports. The much-maligned Timonen will enter back in for Kyle Cumiskey, who played less than eight minutes in each of the first three games of the series. Timonen couldn't be trusted to see much ice time prior to being banished to the press box following Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, but even in a limited role, coach Joel Quenneville appears confident the 40-year-old can deliver some reliable minutes. Timonen has been held without a point in his first 31 games (including playoffs) with the Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks acquired Timonen at the trade deadline with the hope that he'd provide the team with some added scoring punch from the blue line, but he's been a total bust. While it didn't help matters that he missed the first five months of the season while recovering from blood clots, Timonen just hasn't rounded into shape the way the Blackhawks imagined. In his 31 games with Chicago spanning the regular season and playoffs, Timonen has yet to record a single point and has become a defensive liability on the back end. With the Blackhawks facing elimination, it looks like Quenneville will make the tough choice to bench the accomplished veteran and turn to David Rundblad on the defensive pairing next to Brent Seabrook.

The time off to recover should have him feeling refreshed heading into the playoffs, but it's difficult to have much enthusiasm about his prospects. He's been unable to tally a point in his 16 games with the Blackhawks, while putting only 10 shots on goal in the process. That lack of production will likely result in him seeing limited minutes throughout the first round.

Timonen will sit out against the Blues on Thursday and Avalanche on Saturday, and finish his regular season with no points and a minus-3 rating in 16 games for the Blackhawks. After missing most of the season due to blood clots in his lungs and leg, Timonen made virtually no impact for the Blackhawks before this latest injury set in. The team is hoping that some added time to recuperate from the injury will have Timonen operating at full speed for their first game of the postseason.

Timonen (upper body) won't play Tuesday against the Wild. With Timonen out, David Rundblad is slated to re-join the Hawks' blue line corps for Tuesday night's contest.

Timonen is being moved into the Blackhawks' system since being acquired from the Flyers before the trade deadline, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The Blackhawks are taking their time with Timonen -- who missed the previous 10 months with a leg injury -- so he is ready for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Timonen had a little more than 13 minutes of ice time on Saturday in the Hawks' 4-0 loss to the Stars. His ice time has increased recently, but he did have a season-low 7:30 ice time on Wednesday against the Rangers. "His movement seems to be picking up, and I think that complements his game because he anticipates the right way, and that positional awareness defensively puts him in the right spots," Hawks' coach Joel Quenneville said. "Getting there sooner and quicker gives him more effectiveness to his game, and I see some progression in that area."

Timonen (leg) will be on the ice for the first time as a Blackhawk on Monday against the Hurricanes and it will also be his first time skating since April 30, 2014, CSN Chicago reports. Timonen practiced on Sunday after being acquired by the Blackhawks from the Flyers on Friday for two draft picks. It'll be Timonen's first game since last April blood clots discovered in his leg and lungs last summer cost Timonen all of this season up to this point. Timonen is expected to be rusty for the first few games, but the Blackhawks are hoping that he sparks the back-end of the team's defense for the rest of the regular season and the Stanley Cup playoffs.
