Tomas Holmstrom will help coach the Wings' development camp. The 40-year-old made his living in front of the net, so it's only fitting that he will teach net-front skills. "I've been watching lots of games, and seriously, nobody knows how to be in front of net," Holmstrom said. "They go there, but then they move. They don't screen, they don't want to pay the price, because it's not glamorous. And you need a big heart."

Tomas Holmstrom made his retirement official on Tuesday. "It wasn't an easy decision, but it is the right one," said Holmstrom. "Some people may think me crazy for all of those years of taking cross-checking to my neck, my head, to my back and having my teammates shooting hundred mph pucks at me - and at the net sometimes, too. But I had the greatest job in the world. Now, it's time to move on." Holmstrom finished his career with 243 goals, 530 points, and 769 penalty minutes in 1,026 career games. He spent his entire career with the Detroit Red Wings and won four Stanley Cups with the franchise.

Although nothing is official, Tomas Holmstrom is expected to retire before the start of the Detroit Red Wings' training camp. Detroit GM Ken Holland has extended an invitation to Holmstrom to attend the Wings' camp if he so desires. However, it's not clear if Holland would be interested in signing the soon-to-be 40-year-old at this time. If Holmstrom decides he doesn't want to retire, he might be able to earn a spot as a bottom-six forward.

Tomas Holmstrom still hasn't retired and Detroit GM Ken Holland said that he is welcome at training camp if he so desires. Holmstrom turns 40 in 16 days but still may want to return for one more season. He is a bottom six forward at best at this time but still can contribute in front of the net, causing havoc, on the power play. Stay tuned.

Detroit GM Ken Holland expects to know what Tomas Holmstrom's decision is before the end of August. He said the two sides remain in contact. Holmstrom is considering retirement because he isn't sure if his body, especially his knees, can hold up for another NHL season.
