Gilbert reached a deal with the Nuremberg Ice Tigers of Germany's DEL on Friday, theScore reports.

His final appearance at hockey's highest level came with the Kings last season, and he made a brief run with AHL Ontario before skipping over to Washington's minor-league affiliate in Hershey. A mobile minute-munching defenseman in his heyday, Gilbert's NHL career included 198 points (45 goals, 178 assists) in 655 games.

The Kings traded Gilbert to the Capitals on Wednesday for a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2017, and he'll start out with AHL Hershey.

Gilbert hasn't dressed in 11 straight contests and has seen action in just nine of the Kings' last 20 games since returning from a three-game suspension in November.

He'll be eligible to return on November 10th in Montreal.

A healthy scratch in the season's first two games, Gilbert's gotten in the lineup twice in a row now and has surprisingly picked up a pair of helpers while seeing big power-play minutes. It's hard to see that continuing, though, as the 33-year-old blueliner has enjoyed precious little time on the man advantage over the past couple seasons and generally offers little on the offensive end. Indeed, he's equaled last year's point total already -- Gilbert notched a goal and an assist over 45 games with Montreal in 2015-16.

Gilbert was benched for Friday's home game against the Flyers, NHL.com reports.
