Purcell was released from his professional tryout agreement with Boston on Monday.

Though the University of Maine product struggled mightily last season -- suiting up in just 12 games and recording two assists for Los Angeles -- he's proven to be a talented scorer in the past, including a 24-goal, 65-point 2011-12 campaign. By all accounts Purcell had a strong camp with Boston, but couldn't beat out enough of the Bruins' young wingers to win a roster spot. At the very least, Purcell will likely spend 2017-18 in the AHL or overseas.

Purcell has been a healthy scratch for the Kings' last four games, so this move doesn't come as much of a surprise. It remains to be seen whether the veteran winger will be willing to report to AHL Ontario if he isn't claimed by another NHL club off waivers.

Purcell has been limited to just seven games this season after missing time with an illness, so his point drought wasn't that long. However, the Kings are far from an offensive juggernaut (2.4 goals per game), and Purcell is likely past his prime. After missing eight games, it's tough to imagine Purcell being back to top form against Pittsburgh. However, he will be on the second line of a banged up Kings team, so he will certainly have plenty of chances to make some plays in his return.

The Kings have been banged up to start the season and Purcell hasn't been able to get back into the lineup outside of the first two games of the season. It's hard to imagine he'll step back into a fantasy-relevant position immediately but he could work his way into a top-six role given the Kings' injury situation.

Purcell was a member of the Oilers for most of the 2015-16 campaign, tallying 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) over 61 games, before he was dealt to Florida in February, where he added 11 points (three goals, eight assists) over 15 games with the Panthers. The Kings aren't very deep at forward, so Purcell could conceivably slot into a top-six role with his new club in 2016-17.

With free agency upon him, Purcell is looking to lock in a spot with the Panthers in the upcoming 2016-17 season. The 30-year-old right winger was traded from the Oilers for a third-round pick in 2016 in late February. He tallied 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists) this season.

Purcell scored a goal and added an assist in 12:54 of ice time in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Hurricanes.

Purcell put home the opening goal of the game on a perfectly executed three-on-two where he put home a pass from Jiri Hudler. The 30-year-old finishes the season with 14 goals and 28 assists. He'll be an important piece for the Panthers as they will look to make a deep playoff run.
