Chorney announced his retirement from professional hockey Thursday, Seth Rorabaugh of TribLive.com reports.

Chorney was selected by the Oilers in the second round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He spent eight seasons in the NHL split between Edmonton, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Columbus, totaling 22 points in 166 contests, before spending the final three years of his playing career in Europe.

Chorney signed a one-year contract with Swiss club HC Lugano on Saturday.

Chorney was waived by the Capitals last February, and the Blue Jackets would use him for just one NHL game after plucking him off the wire. He amassed four goals and 18 assists over 166 NHL contests between service time with Edmonton, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Columbus. According to this latest report, the Swiss club will have the option to keep Chorney for another year at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.

Chorney played just one game since he was acquired by Columbus on Feb. 22.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, the blueliner will probably look for a new home next season. The sole game that Chorney suited up for as a Blue Jacket was the team's final regular season contest, and was a product of head coach John Tortorella resting members of his defensive corps for the postseason.

Chorney, who was claimed off waivers from the Capitals on Wednesday, is not expected to suit up for Thursday night's road tilt against the Panthers, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic Cleveland reports.

EDGE Analysis

It sounds like Chorney is still settling into his new digs, but it's good to know that the Blue Jackets likely intend to start him out at the highest level versus AHL Springfield once he's ready. At any rate, Chorney will be a depth option for Columbus and presumably waiver fodder in the fantasy arena. He's only tacked on 56 points (four goals, 18 goals) through 165 games between the Oilers, Blues, Penguins and Capitals.

The Capitals waived Chorney on Tuesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Capitals recently acquired Michal Kempny in a trade with the Blackhawks, so they're no longer in need of Chorney's services as a depth defenseman. If he goes unclaimed, the 30-year-old blueliner will almost certainly be assigned to AHL Hershey, where he'll likely spend the rest of the 2017-18 campaign.

Chorney recorded an assist during Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Hurricanes.

EDGE Analysis

Chorney will likely garner more playing time in place of the injured Matt Niskanen (upper body). However, the 30-year-old still has very limited fantasy upside unless he can earn consistent playing time due to injuries as he's clearly behind rookies Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey on the depth chart when everyone is healthy.

Chorney has now been scratched the last two games in the nation's capital and has been struggling to find consistent playing time throughout 2017-18, only averaging 13:01 of ice time when he suits up. The 30-year-old has put up three points (one goal, two assists) in 20 games, but unless Washington encounters injuries to its defensive corps, it seems likely his usage and point production will remain similar for the rest of the season.

The 30-year-old defenseman opened the scoring early in the first period to give him two points in nine games to start the season. He's on track for another single digit season, though consistent ice time may be hard to come by once Matt Niskanen (upper body) returns to the lineup, both of which significantly limits his fantasy value to the deepest of leagues.

Chorney is expected to be a healthy scratch Wednesday against the Penguins, Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Washington reports.

EDGE Analysis

Chorney's absence has more to do with giving youngster Christian Djoos playing time than anything else. He's a trusted depth defender for the Capitals, but there's a lot of competition for regular ice time on the third defense pairing, so his fantasy upside remains extremely predictably limited.

EDGE Analysis

The assist came in Chorney's first action since Jan. 31. He's been an infrequent presence in the Capitals lineup this season, but with Matt Niskanen (lower-body) on the injured list, it's likely the 29-year-old will see more consistent minutes in the short-term.
