Aaltonen signed a contract with HC Vityaz in Russia on Sunday,
EDGE Analysis
The Maple Leafs issued Aaltonen a qualifying offer last week to hold his contract rights as a free agent, but it was already known at that time that he would be returning to the KHL following a Calder Cup win with the AHL's Marlies.

Aaltonen was qualified by Maple Leafs despite returning to the KHL for 2018-19.
EDGE Analysis
The pivot's move to the KHL was a surprise, as he was expected to earn a fourth-line role with the Leafs after a great season with the Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies. The qualifying offer allows the Leafs to keep Aaltonen's rights should he change his mind or return from the KHL.

Aaltonen will return to the KHL for the 2018-19 campaign, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Aaltonen, who notched 20 goals and 43 points in 64 games with AHL Toronto last season, evidently wasn't interested in competing for a bottom-six role with the Maple Leafs in training camp, and will instead head to the KHL in hopes of securing a more prominent role with a club in Russia's premier league. The 2013 sixth-round pick might remain overseas for the remainder of his professional playing career.

Aaltonen was sent down to the AHL Marlies on Monday, reports the Toronto Sun.
EDGE Analysis
Aaltonen had a solid camp, but became a victim of the numbers game -- he didn't need to pass through waivers to get sent to the Toronto Marlies. He will be one of the first forwards summoned to the big club when they need help, but his fantasy value will be limited.

Aaltonen has been working hard to earn the fourth-line center role with the Leafs and has impressed coach Mike Babcock with his "greasy" play, reports the Toronto Sun.
EDGE Analysis
Aaltonen does not have a job locked up, as he's in tough against NHL veterans Dominic Moore and Eric Fehr. But it is Aaltonen who has seen plenty of ice time between Connor Brown and Matt Martin, the team's fourth-line wingers, this preseason. Aaltonen's value will be on the ice, not in the fantasy arena, but he looks like a solid NHLer.
