Greg Nemisz signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Hurricanes on Wednesday evening that could pay him $600,000 if he hangs around in the NHL next season. The 24 year old forward scored eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 46 AHL games last season. The 25th overall pick from the 2008 NHL Entry Draft has played 15 NHL games in his career, won two Memorial Cups with the Windsor Spitfires and played for Team Canada in the World Juniors. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is hoping that trading Kevin Westgarth to Calgary for Greg Nemisz helps shake his team out of its slide. Carolina has lost five straight games to drop its record to 14-16-9 this season. "We need to change some things and we need to change them quickly," Rutherford said. "We need to stop the slide and stop it now." The trade is likely more about sending a message to the team than anything, as Nemisz isn't someone who can turn a struggling team around. The 23-year-old forward has five goals and nine points in 32 AHL contests this season.

The Carolina Hurricanes have dealt forward Kevin Westgarth to the Flames in exchange for winger Greg Nemisz. Nemisz was a first round selection of the Flames in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, but has yet to emerge as a reliable NHLer, skating in just 15 career games. This trade has no impact on fantasy leagues.

Greg Nemisz is still pointless this season with with Abbotsford of the AHL. Nemisz was sidelined for the first two months of the 2012-13 season with a lower body injury and made his debut on Nov. 30. "It's a huge season for Greg," Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward said earlier this month. "Here's a guy that came in with a lot of promise out of the OHL, in Windsor, and went to Memorial Cup (tournaments), did some really good things there and put up points. He's had a decent little run here in Abbotsford over the last couple of years. He's gotten a call up here and there. But this is a marquee year for Nemo."
