Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is hoping that trading Kevin Westgarth to Calgary for Greg Nemisz helps shake his team out of its slide. Carolina has lost five straight games to drop its record to 14-16-9 this season. "We need to change some things and we need to change them quickly," Rutherford said. "We need to stop the slide and stop it now." The trade is likely more about sending a message to the team than anything, as Nemisz isn't someone who can turn a struggling team around. The 23-year-old forward has five goals and nine points in 32 AHL contests this season.

"Here's a guy that came in with a lot of promise out of the OHL, in Windsor, and went to Memorial Cup (tournaments), did some really good things there and put up points. He's had a decent little run here in Abbotsford over the last couple of years. He's gotten a call up here and there. But this is a marquee year for Nemo."
