Orr has retired from the NHL, the Canadian Press reports.

Orr was the prototypical enforcer, racking up 1,186 PIM in just 477 career games between the Bruins, Rangers, and Leafs. Using a fourth-line forward exclusively as a fighter is a diminishing strategy for NHL teams these days, but Orr happened to play in an era where it was relished by fans and coaches alike.

The Maple Leafs recalled Orr on Thursday, the Toronto Star reports. The 33-year-old forward is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, so Saturday's game against the Habs could end up being Orr's final tilt in a Toronto uniform. In 14 games the AHL's Toronto Marlies this season, Orr has recorded four penalty minutes. Over his 476-game NHL career, however, he has notched 24 points and racked up 1,186 PIM.

Orr has been placed on waivers for the purpose of reassignment, reports the Toronto Star. It's a surprise, but it isn't. He can't skate well enough to keep up with today's game, but there have been rumors the Leafs were going to keep him with the NHL squad anyway.

Orr was given what coach Randy Carlyle called a "maintenance morning" to deal with some nagging injuries, but it appears that job will keep him out of the game too. Morgan Reilly, who was projected to be a healthy scratch Friday night, will be the Leafs' seventh defenseman as Mark Fraser returns from injury.

Colton Orr is expected to be available to play when Toronto closes out the preseason with back-to-back games against Detroit. He has been sidelined with a leg bone bruise since the beginning of training camp. Orr should be able to rack up penalty minutes this season, so consider him if you are looking for help in that category.
