ADD'EM: THE CANES ARE COMING primepucks.com Mon 11/10/14 4:14 AM

Elias Lindholm C, Carolina: All of the sudden, the Hurricanes are surging and the 19-year old Swede has contributed mightily with his offensive surge as of late. Lindholm has potted five goals and added two helpers over his last five games. With Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner back healthy, look for Carolina's offense as a whole to continue picking up the scoring pace. The youngster is well worth a fantasy flier. Jori Lehtera C, St. Louis: With all the attention being given to Vladimir Tarasenko these days, his center has been flying under the fantasy radar. The 26-year old has adapted quickly to the NHL game in his first year, having collected 11 points in 13 games and currently on a four-game point streak. Lehtera and his high-flying linemates are clicking on a high level, so get him in your lineup while they are hot. Marcus Johansson RW, Washington: We told you to get him last week and the talented Swede has not disappointed. Despite being held off the scoreboard Saturday night, he has been on a serious roll with 6 points in the previous four games. He continues to click with Andre Burakovsky on the second line while getting top power-play minutes. Start him while he is streaking. Justin Faulk D, Carolina: Along with Lindholm, we strongly suggest you add Carolina's top offensive rearguard as the 22-year old is on the verge of another breakout season. His career-high of 32 points could be eclipsed this season if he continues to develop as the team's power-play quaterback. He has been on a tear with five points in the last five games. Cam Ward G, Carolina: Another repeat customer on our favorite list, but he has temporaily supplanted Anton Khudobin as Carolina's starting goalie with four straight wins. Am I officially sold yet? Not quite, but Mr. Ward has the pedigree and the confidence level right now to continue improving his mediocre numbers to start the season. Check back with us in a few weeks, but he should be a solid no. 2 fantasy goalie option in the short-term at least.

DAILY PRIME - NOVEMBER 8, 2014: NOVEMBER IS HURRICANE SEASON primepucks.com Sat 11/8/14 10:15 AM

THE WINDS OF CHANGE The Carolina Hurricanes, behind goaltender Cam Ward's 4th straight win, have risen from the bottom of the Eastern Conference by switching places with the team they beat last night in the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2 in overtime, who now share that dubious distinction with the Buffalo Sabres. There was a lot skepticism that Ward would not be able to return to form as Carolina's no. 1 net minder especially after how backup Anton Khudobin filled in during his injury last season. After a rough start to this season, and perhaps needing time to build up his strength, the Hurricane goalkeeper has flashed his past form during this modest 4-game winning streak and claiming the starter's job.  Holy glove save Batman! Ward is back....One Cane that is playing strong of late is C Elias Lindholm who has 6 points in the last 4 games with 3-game winners. He has been getting considerable power play time so he is definitely worth a pickup while he is hot...Columbus has now lost 7 straight after a fabulous pre-season record and a 4-2-0 start to the season.  Look for the Blue Jackets to turn their season around as they start to get players back from injury.... The Edmonton Oilers stopped a 4-game losing streak but it was against the lowly Sabres, but it was a win nonetheless and the Oil needed it badly but changes are probably in the works as their lead scorer Taylor Hall is out for a few weeks with a leg injury. Things have not progressed the way Edmonton would have liked, so there are rumors floating around that big changes are on their way..... Detroit halted their three-game losing streak with a win over the New Jersey Devils as they returned home. Jimmy Howard didn't have to do much as he only faced 17 shots from a Devils team that has been beset by injuries of late.  The Devils have now lost 3 in arrow and G Cory Schneider has looked very human in the past 2 games.....Pavel Datsyuk hurt his grown in practice earlier in the day and did not dress. Expect Datsyuk to miss a few games at the least..... The Washington Capitals scored three late 2nd period goals to wipe out a 2-0 deficit and held on for the 3-2 victory. G Braden Holtby stopped 38 of 40 to raise his record to 4-3-2. The Caps need more games like this from Holtby if they are going to make a run for the playoffs.  Marcus Johansson and Andre Burakovsky were the catalyst on offense along with D Matt Niskanen's 2 assists. Burakovsky holds a lot of promise but the other 2 are mainly support/depth...

DAILY PRIME - NOVEMBER 5, 2014: DEVILS BURNED BY NHL HOTTEST PLAYER primepucks.com Wed 11/5/14 6:22 AM

The Florida Panthers and Roberto Luongo continue to be a tough draw as the Boston Bruins squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Cats. Brad Marchand was the offensive catalyst for the third straight game with a goal and an assist giving him 6 points in those three games. If you are looking for a mid-50 point scorer who could possibly give you a little more, then Marchand might be worth a pickup... The Cam Ward resurgence continues from the weekend as Ward and the Carolina Hurricanes won their third straight with a 4-2 win over Columbus. It is safe to put Ward back in your lineup, or possibly pick him up off waivers if he happens to still be available.... The hottest player in the NHL continues to tear it up as Vladimir Tarasenko scored a game-winning power play goal as the blues beat the New Jersey Devils 1-0. There isn't much more to say than to keep him in your lineup until he somehow cools off.  That's 9 points in his last 5 games.  Torrid!  G Jake Allen pitched the 26-save shutout..... Steve Mason and the Philadelphia Flyers played a solid game at home to start off a 4-game homestand. On player who is giving Tarasenko a run for the "hottest player" honors is Jakub Voracek who had 2 goals, including the game-winner. With 18 points in 12 games, he is right up there with Sidney Crosby for the league lead in points. Like Tarasenko, he also has 9 points in his last 5 games..... If the NHL, or fantasy poolies even, haven't taken the Calgary Flames seriously yet, well you just might have to join the ever increasing believers as the Flames took one from the Washington Capitals with a 4-3 OT victory in DC. The Flames have carried over their solid play from last year and Head Coach Bob Hartley has them playing spirited hockey.  Continue to start T.J. Brodie and Mark Giordano on the back end and perhaps Johnny Gaudreau even though he was kept off the score sheet, he does have 5 points in last 4 games. G Jonas Hiller has brought much needed stability in net for the Flames so continue to start him with confidence.... Chicago, behind the 28-save performance by Corey Crawford, blanked the Montreal Canadiens 5-0 at the Bell Centre. Jonathan Toews was the catalyst with a power play goal and an assist as the Habs continue to struggle to score. Their goal differential to date is -14, so someone has to step up or G Carey Price will start to get shell shocked.... Erik Karlsson led the way with a power-play goal that keyed a three-out burst in the third period for the Senators ...

BETWEEN THE PIPES: WEATHERING THE STORM primepucks.com Tue 11/4/14 9:23 AM

What do you do when your team hasn't won a game in the first 8, and both goaltenders are 0-3-1? I don't know?  Keep throwing them both out there and hope one of them sticks.  The Carolina Hurricanes were hoping to be a competitive team this year, but not for the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.  The Hurricanes struggled right out of the gate and that was mainly due to injuries to such key players as Jeff Skinner and Eric Staal, the main components of their offense. The team seemed destined to battle for the right to draft next year's wunderkind at the NHL entry Draft, but something happened over the weekend that could change all that.  But is it too late? There was rumblings that Anton Khudobin deserved a shot at being Carolina's number 1 goaltender on the heels of his performance last season when Cam Ward went down. Although Khudobin did a spectacular job filling in, you have to remember that the 36 NHL games he appeared in last season were 22 more than his best of 14 the year prior with the Boston Bruins. Khudobin was rewarded with a 2-year deal worth $4.5 million.  Ward on the other hand is making $6.3 million a year and I doubt that Carolina is willing to pay a backup goaltender that kind of money.  Whether it was the change of the calendar month to November, or Ward rising to the occasion and seizing the opportunity of Khudobin's poor start, but whatever it was, Ward put in back-to-back performances that reminded people what he is capable of when fully healthy. First he blanked the Arizona Coyotes 3-0 Saturday night to break the ice turning aside all 25 SOG.  Then he returned to the net the following night and stoned the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings 3-2, making some terrific saves to steal that game, earning the game's first star in both contests.  Is Ward back? Remember that he did win the Stanley Cup as A rookie back in 2005-2006 playing in 23 games for the Champion Hurricanes.  Since then, he has played in 60+ games in 5 of the next 6 seasons before the Lockout. Some nagging injuries limited Ward in 2013-2014 but he is looking to reclaim the crease as his own and with the effort he put forth this weekend, I wouldn't doubt he does just that. POST MARKS: SHUT YOUR MOUTH--Not really being known as a shutout goalie, Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury now has 3 shutouts in the team's first 10 games. Perhaps the new system implemented by new Head Coach Mike Johnston benefits more than just the offense. At this current pace, that would give ...

DAILY PRIME- NOVEMBER 3, 2014: MONDAY ROUNDUP primepucks.com Mon 11/3/14 6:04 AM

Today's narrative begins with the following advice: On some days, you can't predict anything in the NHL. Lower-tier teams Carolina, Buffalo, and Arizona all win while the Kings continue to stagger, Washington still searching for their identity and Detroit just slipped up. Interesting enough, Carolina goalie Cam Ward turned back the clock this weekend by posting two straight vintage efforts to remind us of what he is actually capable of when he is at his best. He has free-falled on all fantasy goalie lists over recent years, but maybe.. just maybe he can give it one more shot to return as a legitimate starter. Keep your eye on him, as the goalie waiver wire is pretty thin these days. The future looks bright in Nashville, as Filip Forsberg sparked the offense with a 3-point effort in the 3-1 road win over Vancouver. With 11 points in 11 games, the rookie now leads all first-year players in points. Expect his offensive production to continue to move northward as he is playing a prominent role in Coach Laviolette's offense. On the rise..Michael Hutchinson was "lights out" in the crease for Winnipeg, as the back-up turned aside all 33 shots in their impressive 1-0 win over Chicago. Ondrej Pavelec is clearly the Jet's top guy, but if he stumbles later on, "Hutch" can easily step in. Monitor this situation as the year goes on.. Alex Ovechkin explodes with a goal and three assists in the 6-5 Washington loss to Arizona, as he continues to transition to coach Trotz's new system. One thing is for sure- I would love to own "Ovie" in the second half... Arizona captain Shane Doan enjoyed a fine night in fantasy, notching two goals and one assist. The 38-year old is never a flashy pick, but he is a lock for 50+ points year-in, year out. He is still fantasy relevant, even as his career is on the down-side.. Flames defenseman TJ Brodie is breaking out before our eyes, collecting another three assists in Calgary's decisive triumph in Montreal. His scoring clip will simmer down, but his best days are way ahead of him. Fantasy gold in keeper leagues.. Don't look now, but Jonas Hiller has put up elite goalie numbers for Calgary so far, going 5-2-1 with a 1.84 GAA. If you do own him, prepare to "sell high' if his hot streak persists. I don't see the Flames carrying this play well beyond the quarter-mark... Albeit in a loss, Nathan McKinnon continues to leave his early-season doldrums behind another solid effort. His goal scored gives him four in the last three games. Watch ...

ADD'EM: WARD SHOWS SOME LIFE! primepucks.com Mon 11/3/14 5:23 AM

I will be the first to admit that this week's crop of must-adds are nowhere near sure bets, but there is alot of high upside associated with the young wingers, plus a few goalies that have done it before. So, there is plenty of opportunity to bolster your team's output by adding the right guy from this list: Marcus Johansson LW, Washington:With 4 points in his last 4 games, the left winger has been flourishing lately on the second line with Andre Burakovsky. While Johansson didn't deliver last season as a top liner(44 pts/80 gms), he is still one of the team's better offensive weapons and has the ability to pad 10-15 points to last season's point total. Also, the 24-year old continues to play on the primary power-play unit alongside Ovechkin and Backstrom. Need I say more? Nikita Kucherov RW,Tampa Bay:The 21- year old has been white hot with nine points over the last five games. He has played himself up to the 2nd line while clicking with Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson. With 11 points in 12 games, he is off to a tremendous start but keep in mind that second-year players will have their offensive production hit a wall a few times. If you can stomach the inconsistencies, this youngster has the skill to put up 50+ points provided he stays in the top-six. He is well worth the shot.. Derek Stepan C, New York Rangers: His impending return to the Blueshirts could provide the jolt of confidence that the pivot-deficient Rangers need to revive their offense. Coming off a career-high 57 points, he will probably be back centering the "hot" Rick Nash which should only help him get back in the offensive swing of things. This addition is a no-brainer if he is available. Ray Emery G, Philadelphia: Three winnable home games on the upcoming docket and Steve Mason's well-documented struggles could contribute to a huge fantasy week for Emery. Despite a poor outing against Lightning his last time out, he could grab all three starts a if he gets the nod and plays well against Edmonton. Berube will ride the hot hand, so only start him if you are in desperation for 2nd goalie help.. High risk/ high reward candidate with potential to unseat Mason. Cam Ward G, Carolina: Yeah, I know I haven't been high on him but man, did he look good this weekend in securing back-to-back wins for the previously winless Hurricanes! If he is still available and you are stinking up the joint in the goalie department, give him a chance and stash him on your bench. Carolina has plenty of money ...
