Ward signed a one-day contract with Carolina on Wednesday to retire as a member of the Hurricanes.

As a 21-year-old rookie, Ward went 15-8 with a 2.14 GAA in the 2006 playoffs to help the 'Canes lift Lord Stanley's cup on his way to winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. The veteran netminder would spend 13 seasons playing in Carolina, in which he posted a 318-244-84 record and .909 save percentage. After playing for the Blackhawks last year, Ward will hang up his pads and call it a career, finishing 23rd overall on the career wins lists.

Ward allowed four goals on 49 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Predators on Saturday.

Everything was looking good early for the veteran goaltender, who held a 2-0 lead after the first period. Then everything went south, as the Predators posted 36 shots and five goals in the final two periods. Despite this loss, Ward still posted a strong second half, going 9-4-0 after Jan. 21. Even with the hot streak at the end, though, Ward still posted some of the worst numbers of his career. He went 16-12-4 with a 3.69 GAA and .897 save percentage in 33 games during 2018-19.

Ward will defend the blue paint in Saturday's road matchup with the Predators, Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Ward was forced into action unexpectedly Friday against Dallas after Corey Crawford suffered a groin injury, and he performed admirably, turning aside 25 of 26 shots en route to a convincing 6-1 victory. The veteran netminder will look to stay sharp and end the season on a high note by securing his 17th win of the campaign in a road matchup with a Nashville team that's only averaging 2.83 goals per game at home in 2018-19, 25th in the NHL.

Ward stopped 25 of 26 shots after replacing Corey Crawford (groin) early in the second period of Friday's 6-1 win over the Stars.

EDGE Analysis

The strong relief effort earned Ward his 16th win of the season. The veteran netminder hasn't been particularly consistent in his first campaign with Chicago, but with Crawford banged up once again, Ward will likely be in net for the season finale Saturday in Nashville.

Ward turned aside 37 of 40 shots in regulation and overtime, and all three shootout attempts he faced, in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Blues.

EDGE Analysis

Making his first start in a month, the netminder got beaten twice in the final eight minutes of the third period just to send the game into OT, but Ward shut the door on the St. Louis comeback attempt after that. The Hawks end their season with one last back-to-back set this weekend, so the 35-year-old could see action once more and get a shot at his 16th win before hitting the links.

Ward hasn't tasted game action since he allowed four goals on 33 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Sharks on March 3, so he'll definitely have some serious rust to shake off Wednesday. The veteran netminder will be looking to pick up his 15th win of the season in a tough home matchup with a hot Blues team that's gone 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.
