Allen was assigned to AHL Hamilton on Thursday. The assignment is hardly a surprise, as Allen has played in just five games with the Canadiens this season, and hasn't played since being activated from injured reserve on December 23rd.

That's something that can pay dividends over the long haul for older rear-guards like Sergei Gonchar (17:28) and Anrei Markov (18:44).

Allen will be active for Saturday night's game in Boston, Hockey Inside Out reports. Allen, who was acquired from Anaheim on Thursday, took part in Saturday's morning skate, paired with Mike Weaver.

Allen was traded to the Canadiens on Thursday in exchange for forward Rene Bourque. Allen becomes the second addition the Habs have made to their blue line in the last two weeks, after the team acquired Sergei Gonchar from the Stars via trade Nov. 11. The 34-year-old, who appeared in six games with the Ducks, doesn't have much offensive ability in his arsenal, but he's been quite reliable in his own zone over his career. He's in the final season of a three-year, $10.5 million contract, so he'll just amount to a rental player for the Habs.

Allen (lower body) was activated from injured reserve Friday. The move verifies that Allen will return to the lineup Friday against the Coyotes, as was expected after he practiced fully Thursday. The blueliner contributed 10 points to go along with a plus-20 rating over 68 games last season.
