Brian McGrattan is now playing the role of teacher rather than student. When McGrattan entered the ranks of professional hockey, he was taught the ins and outs of fighting by Dennis Bonvie, who AHL record McGrattan eventually broke as he had 551 minutes in 2004-05, breaking Bonvie's record of 552 set in 1997. Now, McGrattan is teaching Flames rookie Keegan Kanzig the ropes. Kanzig looks like he will have value in the year's to come in the penalty minute category, but not this season.

The Calgary Flames have re-signed winger Brian McGrattan to a two-year contract worth $750,000 per season. The rugged enforcer was claimed off waivers by the team during the past season and GM Jay Feaster was apparently happy with what he saw. He could generate value in fantasy leagues that count penalty minutes.

Brian McGrattan was a healthy scratch on Sunday. McGrattan was joined in the press box by Anton Babchuk and Derek Smith. Just an FYI as no one has fantasy value.

Brian McGrattan's ten minute misconduct Sunday was aimed to stop inciting. McGrattan whupped the Canucks Tom Sestito and then saluted the crowd a la Jaromir Jagr. Jagr never receives a penalty when he salutes as the referees determine that it is celebratory rather than trying to incite. The incident arose last season when Arron Asham incite the crowd with gestures after winning a fight against Jay Beagle.

Brian McGrattan picked up 15 penalty minutes in his 2012-13 Calgary Flames debut Sunday. McGrattan got into his first altercation in 13 months as he won a convincing fight against the Canucks Tom Sestito. McGrattan was so happy that he threw up his arms to salute the crowd, a gesture that got him an extra 10 minutes from the referee in the penalty box. This is McGrattan's second go round with the Flames as he also played 34 games in the 2009-10 season compiling a goal, four points in 86 penalty minutes. McGrattan could be useful in leagues that reward penalty minutes if he manages to maintain a consistent role in the lineup.
