B.J. Crombeen returned to action on Tuesday April 2.

B.J. Crombeen has agreed to a two-year, $2.3 million extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Crombeen was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has seven points and 86 penalty minutes in 30 games this season, but is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Crombeen's 86 penalty minutes are fourth in the league but that's pretty much the extent of his fantasy value.

He also fought Matt Kassian earlier in the match to give him 22 penalty minutes on the night. Crombeen sits fourth in the league with 86 minutes in the sin bin and he leads the league with 12 fighting majors.

Tampa coach Guy Boucher said B.J. Crombeen is medically cleared to play Thursday. However, it wouldn't be surprising if he got the game off after he was knocked woozy in a fight with Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo on Tuesday. Crombeen left that game as a precaution and Boucher admitted that he isn't sure if the Lightning winger will dress Thursday.

The Lightning were enraged at the play when Rinaldo appeared to continue throwing punches when Crombeen was down on his knees. He looked woozy when he left the ice for repairs, but after the game he seemed to be better. "They always play a hard physical game and we're trying to establish that we do that, too," Crombeen said referring to the contest. "We're a big team, we play hard and we're willing to stand up for ourselves any time. When two teams like that meet, there's going to be some physicality and some bad blood that grows over time." We'll keep him as active for now. Crombeen has two assists and 30 penalty minutes in nine games.

B.J. Crombeen is expected to add some much-needed grit to Tampa Bay's lineup this season. "I try to bring a physical element to my game and try to be there for my teammates," he said. "But a big part of my game has always been to play a good two-way game, play strong defensive forward, do some checking, some penalty killing, all that kind of stuff and try to make it difficult on the other team's top players." Crombeen posted three points, 71 penalty minutes and 22 hits in 40 games with St. Louis last season, while averaging just over eight minutes of ice time per match.

B.J. Crombeen isn't letting diabetes slow him down. The Lightning forward has been a Type I diabetic since he was 9, and with training camp expected to be more intense than previous seasons, that means more "self-managing" for him, as the team's head trainer calls it. Tampa Bay acquired him in July from St. Louis. "As long as you're willing to take the time to manage it and check your blood and watch what you're eating, it becomes a way of life," Crombeen said.

B.J. Crombeen said that the NHL's decision to walk away from the union's latest offer is "mind-boggling." "The deal is right there in front of them," Crombeen said. "It's pretty simple for them if they want to make a deal, but they made it very clear to us that they don't. They're trying to squeeze five more cents out of a deal that can be done, and we can be back playing hockey sooner. It's very frustrating, but I wouldn't say I'm overly surprised because of the way they acted throughout the whole process." The NHL stated that they excepted the union to give them a yes or no response to whether or not the players would agree to a few key demands and when the union offered a counterproposal instead, the NHL promptly rejected it.

B.J. Crombeen has joined the ECHL Orlando Solar Bears. Crombeen is expected to make his debut on Saturday. Although Crombeen has 288 NHL games under his belt at this point, the ECHL will not be a new experience for him. He spent 22 games with the ECHL Idaho Steelheads between the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns.
