Bishop will join the Stars' front office Saturday when his contract with the Sabres expires, Saad Yousuf of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Bishop hasn't played in the NHL since the 2019-20 season due to a career-ending knee injury, but he technically remained active for the remainder of his contract. He'll retire from playing with a career 222-128-36 record, 2.32 GAA and .921 save percentage over 413 contests. Bishop will take over as Director of Player Development for the Stars, with whom he spent parts of three seasons at the tail end of his career.

Dallas traded Bishop (knee) and a seventh-round pick to Buffalo on Friday for future considerations.
EDGE Analysis
Bishop's knee injury is expected to prevent the 35-year-old from returning to the NHL, so the Sabres will take on the final year of his contract while picking up a late draft pick. The team could stash him on long-term injured reserve once the 2022-23 campaign begins, but Buffalo may not need to worry about that with over $35 million in cap space currently.

Stars general manager Jim Nill said Saturday that Bishop will remain on long-term injured reserve with a degenerative knee injury that will spell the end of the goaltender's career, Matthew DeFranks of The Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
The news comes as a major shock, as Bishop just completed his first conditioning game with AHL Texas and was expected to start again for the affiliate Saturday. He allowed eight goals on 34 shots and mentioned after the game that his knee felt fine for the first two periods but was a little sore in the third. The 35-year-old last played an NHL game in 2020 and spent over a year trying to return from surgery, but his degenerative knee condition ultimately was too much to overcome. Bishop finishes his career having posted fantastic numbers (222-128-36, .921 save percentage, 2.32 GAA) with St. Louis, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles and Dallas. He'll remain on the Stars' books through the 2022-23 season while the team waits for his six-year, $29.5 million contract extension he signed in May 2017 to expire.

Bishop (knee) was recalled from his conditioning assignment with AHL Texas by the Stars on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
Although Bishop's been recalled by the big club, he'll remain on long-term injured reserve indefinitely with his knee injury. The 35-year-old netminder struggled in his lone appearance with AHL Texas during his conditioning stint, allowing eight goals on 34 shots, but that was to be expected considering Bishop hasn't seen game action in nearly 16 months.

Bishop (knee) is expected to join AHL Texas on a conditioning assignment soon, Matthew DeFranks of The Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
The minor-league Stars are in action versus AHL Chicago on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, so there could be plenty of opportunities for Bishop to play. How the netminder fits into Dallas' goal plan moving forward remains to be seen but he should be in the mix for at least a share of the workload once deemed fully fit.

Bishop (knee) was placed on long-term injured reserve, Matthew DeFranks of The Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Bishop was expected to start the year on long-term injured reserve and there hasn't been much information about when he might return. While he's gone, Dallas will use some combination of Braden Holtby, Anton Khudobin and Jake Oettinger in net.

Bishop (knee), as expected, will not take the ice in any of the Stars' three remaining preseason contests, Bruce LeVine of Dallas Stars Radio reports.
EDGE Analysis
Considering Bishop was originally slated to start the year on long-term injured reserve, the fact that he isn't going to play in any exhibition contests shouldn't come as a surprise. Dallas already has a logjam of netminders to sort out with Jake Oettinger, Anton Khudobin and Braden Holtby all seeing action during the preseason. Still, once cleared to play, the 34-year-old Bishop should be given every opportunity to reclaim the starting job despite missing the entire 2020-21 season.

Mike Heika of the Stars' official site believes Bishop (knee) will start the upcoming season on injured reserve.
EDGE Analysis
Bishop missed the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign with his knee issue, and although he's been practicing, there's no telling if or when he'll be ready to return this season. Heika believes Anton Khudobin and Braden Holtby will begin the upcoming campaign in the NHL with Jake Oettinger beginning in the AHL.

General manager Jim Nill said the Stars won't know when or if Bishop (knee) will be ready to play, Bruce LeVine of Dallas Stars Radio reports.
EDGE Analysis
Nill's comments cast a dark cloud over the hope for Bishop to be ready by the start of the season. He's still recovering from surgery on his right knee that kept him out for all of last season. As it stands, the Stars won't need to rush the 34-year-old back after signing Braden Holtby on Wednesday to join Anton Khudobin and Jake Oettinger as the team's options in goal. More information on Bishop should be available when the Stars open training camp in September.

Bishop (knee) won't play in 2020-21.
EDGE Analysis
Bishop has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee all season in hopes of returning to action at some point in 2020-21, but the Stars have decided to shut him down for the year so he can focus on returning to full health for the 2021-22 campaign. Anton Khudobin and Jake Oettinger will continue to shoulder the load in goal as Dallas pushes for a playoff spot over the final month of the season.
