Mettenberger will only have a few days to prove his worth over the likes of Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones as Saturday's 53-man roster deadline looms large.

Despite default starting QB Philip Rivers resting on the sideline, Mettenberger saw veteran backup Kellen Clemens and undrafted rookie Mike Bercovici take the majority of the snaps throughout the contest on Friday. A starter for the Titans when now current Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was the head coach, many assumed Mettenberger could earn the No. 2 spot if he performed well during the preseason. That doesn't appear to be in the cards, however, as he has been seemingly bypassed on the depth chart by both Clemens and Bercovici and could be in danger of being released.

Mettenberger was awful in his preseason debut Saturday, completing just two of eight passes for 22 yards with an interception against the Titans.

The Titans certainly justified their decision to waive the 25-year-old quarterback this offseason in favor of veteran backup Matt Cassel. Mettenberger showed why he's winless in 10 career pro starts, and will need to turn it around immediately if he wants to beat out Kellen Clemens for the No.2 spot in San Diego.

With Cassel joining the Titans, Mettenberger's path to reps was even more crowded, so now the 24-year-old will get the opportunity to go through OTAs and training camp elsewhere. At 6'5", 220 pounds, Mettenberger's size and arm strength should make him an intriguing option for teams in the market for a reserve signal-caller.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson would like to keep Mettenberger in Tennessee this coming season despite the offseason acquisition of veteran free agent Matt Cassel, the Nashville Post reports.

EDGE Analysis

Quarterback depth isn't easy to come by in the NFL, and Robinson would prefer to keep his options open behind starter Marcus Mariota rather than deal Mettenberger to a quarterback-needy destination. Mettenberger saw meaningful action in six games last season, but the 24-year-old will have to beat out Cassel then hope for an injury to Mariota in order to have a realistic chance of contributing for the Titans in 2016.

Mettenberger (forearm) is questionable to return Sunday against the Colts.

Before leaving the contest, Mettenberger had completed 5-of-13 passes for 38 yards and an interception while rushing twice for 4 yards and a touchdown. In his absence, Alex Tanney has taken over quarterback duties for the Titans.

Mettenberger will be at the helm once again Sunday when the 3-12 Titans finish off their season against the Colts. It'll be Mettenberger's fourth start of the 2015 campaign, and he's coming off a one touchdown, two-turnover performace last Sunday against the Texans. Should the Titans be down for most of the contest this upcoming Sunday, Mettenberger could have plenty of chances to throw the ball.
