In The Spotlight - Week 11 Recap fantasysharks.com Mon 11/19/12 4:00 AM

Week 11 Fantasy Headlines: Matt Schaub Racks Up 527 Passing Yards & 5 TD Passes AJ Compiles Career-High 14 Catches and 273 Receiving Yards Chad Henne & Justin Blackmon Both Compile Monster Outings Brady & Patriots Roll Over Colts; Gronkowski Injured "The Arm" Torches Philadelphia With 4 TD Passes Arian Foster's Scoring Streak Snapped Matt Ryan Tosses Five Picks and No TDs But Falcons Still Win Another 130-Plus Total-Yard Game From Trent Richardson A.J. Green Scores In His Ninth Straight Game GAME SUMMARIES & FANTASY COMMENTARY: Bye week: Minnesota Vikings (6-4), New York Giants (6-4), Seattle Seahawks (6-4) and Tennessee Titans (4-6). THURSDAY NIGHT GAME: Buffalo Bills 19 (4-6) | Miami Dolphins 14 (4-6) Fantasy Focus -- Bills: Buffalo did not score an offensive touchdown. With Fred Jackson (concussion) inactive, electric C.J. Spiller (22-91-0 rushing and 3-39-0 receiving) carried the offense, amassing 130 total yards on a season-high 25 total touches. Unfortunately, the Bills frequently replaced Spiller in the red zone with the largely ineffective Tashard Choice (6-14-0 rushing and 1-0-0 receiving). With the running game clicking and the much-maligned Buffalo defense playing well, the Bills elected to go conservative on offense. Ryan Fitzpatrick (17/27 for 168-0-0 passing and 3-15-0 rushing) has not tossed a touchdown pass in two of his last three games played, and it was the fifth time this season that Fitzpatrick passed for less than 200 yards in a game. Steve Johnson (6-79-0 on nine targets) topped Buffalo in receiving, and he has caught six balls in two straight contests. Fitzpatrick tried to get the ball to Donald Jones (2-11-0 on five targets) twice in the end zone, but they didn't hook up. The Bills triggerman also had a red-zone pass intended for Scott Chandler (2-30-0 on four targets) broken up. The Buffalo defense allowed seven offense points and racked up three sacks, two interceptions and one recovered fumble. Leodis McKelvin scored on a 79-yard punt return in the first quarter. Fantasy Tip: Although the Bills are trying to get the ball into the hands of Jones more frequently, I wouldn't trust him as anything more than a so-so WR4 right now. The Buffalo offense should reassert itself in Week 12 with a favorable road matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Fantasy Focus -- Dolphins: Remember all the predictions about Reggie Bush (10-20-0 rushing and 2-15-0 receiving) coming out and playing like a man on a mission after he ...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 4 fantasysharks.com Tue 9/25/12 9:00 AM

Injuries to starting running backs in Arizona, Buffalo and Miami are sure to cause a bit of a frenzy on the waiver wire this week, though none appear to be serious. A couple of wideouts make the highest list this week, including the much-anticipated return from suspension of a player for the Minnesota Vikings. We even list a kicker in this week's hot list, a justified selection as he's gone from passed over on fantasy draft day to Top 3 at his position. On to this week's waiver wire wonders ... Smokin' Hot WR Jerome Simpson, Minnesota The suspension is over, so this will be the last waiver wire period to pick Simpson up before he steps onto the field this week. We mentioned Simpson in our post-draft review, and we're putting him at the top of this week's list as we see him stepping directly onto the field and having the impact of a top fantasy wideout. Michael Jenkins and Devin Aromashodu will be pushed to the bench as Simpson assumes the No. 1 role for the Vikings. Grab him now before the stats start piling up. WR Leonard Hankerson, Washington All fantasy owners should be wary of reading between the lines when coach Mike Shanahan speaks, so when he tells us that Hankerson will be the full-time starter, we should take a close look at the stats (or tea leaves!) for confirmation. With Pierre Garcon out, Hankerson had a positive impact on this week's game, grabbing four passes for 56 yards. He is outplaying both Josh Morgan and Santana Moss, so we see him getting consistent playing time even when Garcon returns. RB Ryan Williams, Arizona Chris ‘Beanie' Wells left last week's game with turf toe, an injury that can linger on for several weeks. Williams filled in admirably, picking up 95 yards in total offense though most of it was in garbage time as the Cardinals salted away the game. Full-time running backs are extremely rare on the waiver wire, which is why Williams lands in the top echelon of this week's story. He carries some injury risk - Arizona has made an effort to limit his touches to take care of his sore knee. For the time being, Wells' injury pushes Williams into the role of lead back for the Cardinals. K Justin Tucker, Baltimore Despite only connecting on one field goal in Week 3, Tucker finds himself as one of the most sought-after players on the waiver wire. He hasn't missed yet this season, booting three field goals in each of the first two weeks, two of which were more than 50 yards long. The Ravens are the kind of...

2012 Divisional Playoff Round fantasysharks.com Sun 1/15/12 8:00 AM

Welcome to the Divisional Round edition of the Brew Crew Corner. During the postseason I go back over the season and analyze how it went. I like to look at the value that each position gave -- both positive or negative -- which I use to help prepare for next season. Players that finish with a big positive number can be great picks next season if their draft stock is still a good value, while players with a negative number might fall hard in drafts which will be another type of value pick. Beware as sometimes players that have a big season can sometimes be overvalued in drafts, making their draft position too high. Sometimes players who finished with a negative value will be players you would want to avoid next season. Each situation should be looked at on case by case. When looking at these values, you should question. Did the player suffer an injury, and how likely are they to return healthy? Did this player have a breakout season or did he benefit from an injury to other players? We will take a look at the running back value for the 2011. I determine the value by taking the Average Draft Position (ADP) from this year's draft and comparing it to the final rankings of a player based on fantasy points. For example, if a running back was going in drafts as the 10th running back and finished the season fifth overall among running backs, his value would be +5. Top 20 Running Backs with Good Value in 2011 RANK Player +/- 7 Darren Sproles, New Orleans +38 41 Toby Gerhart, Minnesota +37 34 Dexter McCluster, Kansas City +35 42 Kevin Smith, Detroit +34 47 Jackie Battle, Kansas City +32 11 Michael Bush, Oakland +29 52 Lance Ball, Denver +28 53 Chris Ogbonnaya, Cleveland +28 29 DeMarco Murray, Dallas +26 56 Kahlil Bell, Chicago +26 37 Donald Brown, Indianapolis +26 5 Marshawn Lynch, Seattle +24 59 Marcel Reece, Oakland +24 26 Roy Helu, Washington +23 51 Maurice Morris, Detroit +23 12 Reggie Bush, Miami +21 50 Isaac Redman, Pittsburgh +20 23 Willis McGahee, Denver +19 30 Ben Tate, Houston +18 20 Mike Tolbert, San Diego +15 Top 20 Running Backs with Poor Value in 2011 RANK Player +/- 98 Jamaal Charles, Kansas City -98 138 Jerome Harrison, Detroit -82 134 Bilal Powell, New York Jets -68 109 Ronnie Brown, Philadelphia -63 118 Shane Vereen, New England -60 80 Knowshon Moreno, Denver -59 83 Ryan Torain, Washington -39 114 Jamie Harper, Tenessee -39 ...

Leftovers fantasysharks.com Fri 11/25/11 9:06 AM

Jay Cutler, Matt Schaub and Matt Cassel are on the shelf for a while and their replacements are rather ... uh ... uninspiring. Caleb Hanie will step in while Cutler tries to recover from hand surgery and will take the reigns of an offense that is largely dependent on the legs and hands of Matt Forte. Hanie will likely be asked to not lose the game more than he is expected to win the game. This approach does not translate well for fantasy football relevance. Verdict: Instant mashed potatoes. Easily found, not quite the real thing and painfully plain. Discard immediately while you can still tell what they are. The last time Matt Leinart faced off with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he completed half of his passes. Well, he only attempted six passes and those three completions only went for 22 yards. The now 28-year old Leinart has reportedly matured, meaning that he will likely spend the weekend prepping for the Jaguars rather than checking out the Black Friday deals on hot tubs. I can appreciate his newfound commitment to his career, but the fact is that Leinart lacks the talent to carry a team. Expect more than six pass attempts, but the Texans know that their only hope to cling on to the division lead lies with Arian Foster, Ben Tate and the running game. Verdict: Another helping of instant mashed potatoes here. The only thing that can make leftover instant mashed potatoes stomachable is to douse them with gravy. Andre Johnson is likely to return this week, and if he is able to return at full strength his talent will give Leinart a reliable target. Be careful though, and know your potatoes from your gravy. Tyler Palko, last year's leftover fruit cake and Kyle Orton's neckbeard ... three things that will never find themselves in high demand. If you find yourself dependent on Palko or Orton to carry your team you probably will want to get to the front of the line and ask Santa for a new quarterback now. By now, Kevin Smith and the Detroit Lions have already faced off with the Green Bay Packers. We should have a much better idea of how much of Smith's Week 11 heroics were him and how much were the Panthers' porous run defense. Verdict: The thing about sweet potatoes is, well, they aren't actually potatoes; they are actually a root. Is Smith the real thing? He is running with a renewed passion and appreciation for the game that he didn't have before. Some weeks he will likely be a great big, plain, root bound to the confines of his limited talent,...

The Feeding Frenzy fantasysharks.com Tue 10/25/11 9:06 AM

There's already been a mountain of injuries throughout the NFL season but Week 7 was a killer for fantasy owners. We had the last second scratches (Marshawn Lynch), the guys who played a couple of snaps before leaving for the rest of the game (Darren McFadden, Joseph Addai, Beanie Wells, Santana Moss) and the players who were in and out with nagging injuries (Ryan Mathews). All and all it was a crazy Sunday for fantasy owners. With the injuries mounting and bye weeks in full force, let's take a look at the top waiver wire targets for this week and whether or not you should pursue them. DeMarco Murray, RB Cowboys -- I had Murray on the list last week but thought it would be a good idea to mention him again just in case he's still available in your league. After putting up 253 yards against the Rams this will be the last week you'll be able to get Murray. Let's take away all the numbers for a minute. Yes, Murray played the dreadful Rams and one of his runs went for 91 yards. Looking deeper though Murray was a sight for sore eyes for Dallas fans, me being one of them. I'm not sure if Felix Jones thought he was playing in the NFL or on 'Dancing with the Stars' because he's spent more time dancing than running throughout his career. You know what Jones is? He's a speedy third-down back and I've been saying that for a while now. On Sunday the best thing about Murray, besides the 40 fantasy points he put up, was the fact that he hit the hole hard and ran with determination. That's something no running back has done in Dallas since Marion Barber was in his prime a couple of years ago. I'm not sure when the Cowboys are going to get the memo that giving the ball to Tashard Choice is a waste of time but after two fumbles in two weeks, that time should be coming soon. Jerry Jones is everything in Dallas from the owner to the parking lot attendant and he loves Felix, so I'm sure we haven't heard the last of him. However, if Murray keeps running like he did on Sunday, even Jerry will have a hard time keeping him out of the lineup. Funny how I never mentioned the head coach, isn't it? The Final Call: If Murray is still on your waiver wire you should run to get him. Just keep in mind that you missed his best game of the season though, so keep your expectations realistic. Keiland Williams, RB Lions -- With Jahvid Best out for a while, Williams and Maurice Morris rotated at running back on Sunday with each of them getting nine carries. As the year goes on I like...

Corner Lockdown: Covering Week 7 fantasysharks.com Sat 10/22/11 6:00 AM1 Comment

Running Wild Maurice Morris has become a hot commodity in the fantasy world since it appears that starting Detroit running back Jahvid Best is going to miss at least this week because of a concussion. This is now Best's third concussion in the last three years, and the team is taking it very seriously. Remember that he also suffered one back in college and missed more than a month of playing time. It's unknown how much time Best will miss now, but it's a safe bet that Morris will be starting on Sunday. With Jerome Harrison done for the season, it looks like Morris is going to get a healthy share of the load in the Detroit backfield. That said, snatch Morris up off the waiver wire if he's still available. He should provide a great boost in the flex spot or be a nice bye-week filler at the very least. Morris has been around the league and is a good runner with solid pass catching skills. And if the Lions get the passing game going early it will open things up for him to operate against a spotty Atlanta defense. Morris is a great spot start this week. Even with the loss of starting running back Jamaal Charles, Kansas City's backfield still has some depth to it. Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster have both been average at best filling the void, but Jackie Battle has been very impressive. Battle didn't get many reps the first three weeks after Charles got hurt, but he sure made his presence felt in Week 5 with 119 yards rushing on 19 carries. The Chiefs are coming off a bye week, and I'd be shocked if Battle isn't a main part of the game plan against a weak Oakland run defense. Jones' average yards per carry has been terrible and McCluster has been used more as a receiver, so Battle could see the majority of work out of the backfield on Sunday. He's a very risky play, but it might be very rewarding for fantasy owners, seeing that the Raiders have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to running backs so far this season. The running back situation in Cleveland is starting to get interesting as well now that Peyton Hillis is battling a hamstring injury and a bad attitude. The fantasy darling of 2010 is very questionable to play in Week 7, so this would open the door for Montario Hardesty to get a nice workload. The Browns are getting sick of Hillis' contract complaints and are very high on Hardesty. It would be a good idea to grab him if you don't already have him as a handcuff to Hillis. He hasn't really gotten much going so far this season, but has had a ...
