Jackson is signing a one-day contract to retire with the Rams. The running back recorded eight straight seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards between 2005 and 2012 and was named to three Pro Bowls in his career. He retires holding the Rams' franchise record for rushing yards.

Jackson was on the field for 11 of the Patriots' 83 offensive snaps in Sunday's 20-18 loss to the Broncos in the AFC title game, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.

Jackson, who carried four times for eight yards with a TD in the game, is slated to become a free agent this offseason, and at this stage it's unclear how much interest the Patriots will have in retaining the 32-year-old Jackson, who logged 21 carries for 50 yards and a TD for the team in two regular season contests in 2015.

Jackson gained 16 yards on six carries and secured one of two targets for two yards in Saturday's 27-20 Divisional Round victory over the Chiefs.

The 32-year-old received limited opportunity on the ground, with Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski all on the field for the first time since November. On the other hand, Jackson was essentially the entire Patriots' rushing attack, as James White, who tallied a single carry, was the only other back to tote the ball for New England. With the Patriots' running game a true week-to-week proposition, it remains virtually impossible to project what Jackson's usage might be in the AFC Championship Game next week.

Jackson was on the field for 24 of the Patriots' 60 snaps on offense in Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Dolphins, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. In his second game withe team, Jackson ran for 35 yards and a touchdown on a team-high 14 carries, while also catching one pass for 20 yards.

Meanwhile, James White saw 23 snaps, while Brandon Bolden was on the field for 17, while also seeing special teams work. As the postseason approaches, the Patriots figure to employ some form of a running back committee, though at this stage, coach Bill Belichick indicates that the team believes that Jackson can help out on all three downs, a scenario that makes the veteran newcomer worthy of targeting in postseason formats, with the understanding that White figures to remain the team's primary pass-catching back.

Jackson ran for 35 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. He also grabbed his only target for a 20-yard gain.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran was more effective in his second game as a Patriot, but he hit the sidelines early, along with the rest of the starters, because of the team's overall poor showing. Jackson received the most carries of any New England back Sunday, and he should carry a heavy load in the postseason, along with Branden Bolden and James White. The Patriots will go on bye next weekend before beginning their postseason run the following week.

Jackson was on the field for nine of the Patriots' 56 snaps on offense in Sunday's 26-20 overtime loss to the Jets, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. In the process, in his debut with the team, Jackson carried seven times for 15 yards.

EDGE Analysis

Looking ahead, we'd expect Jackson's role in the Patriots' offense to increase, but for the time being Brandon Bolden (27 snaps Sunday) remains in the team's early-down mix and James White's pass-catching role should remain stable. It's an arrangement that makes Jackson a speculative fantasy play in Week 17 against the Dolphins, though the veteran power back could emerge as a fantasy factor by the time the postseason rolls around.

Jackson is slated to be active Sunday against the Jets, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

It remains to be seen how much of a workload the 32-year-old back will see in his debut with the Patriots, but if things go as hoped, he could progress to absorbing a decent share of the team's "big back" duties previously handled by LeGarrette Blount. Jackson visited with the Patriots last week and previously played under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels while both were with the Rams. Given that familiarity, as well as New England's season-ending injuries to running backs Dion Lewis (knee) and LeGarrette Blount (hip), adding an accomplished tailback like Jackson certainly makes sense. At 32 years old, Jackson's best days are behind him, but his veteran presence should help bolster the Patriots' running back group of James White, Brandon Bolden and Joey Iosefa moving forward.

Jackson, who was released by the Falcons in February, recently said he is only willing to sign with a contender, ESPN.com reports. Jackson likely has his eyes on a backup role with a top-notch team, but he may have a hard time finding the right fit. If nothing comes up, it's possible he'll retire, as his 32nd birthday is in July. Jackson averaged just 3.7 yards on 190 carries for the Falcons last season, and while he's unlikely to get that many touches in 2015, he may be able to find a decent team with a better offensive line.
