The Boston Herald confirms the Patriots have no interest in re-signing free agent DE Shaun Ellis. The Patriots lost Mark Anderson to the Bills and are waiting for free agent Andre Carter to make progress in his recovery from a torn quad, but they don't want the soon-to-be 35-year-old Ellis back as even a bargain-basement depth signing. Ellis lost his starting job early last season, and is far from guaranteed of cracking anybody's Week 1 roster.

Free agent DE Shaun Ellis "looks to be done," according to the Boston Globe. Ellis entered the season as an early-down starter, only to lose his job to Brandon Deaderick down the stretch. Turning 35 in June, the respected veteran won't be back with the Patriots in 2012.

Patriots DE Shaun Ellis was benched for Brandon Deaderick in the Patriots' Week 11 game against the Chiefs. Ellis left the locker room quickly after the game, and already coming off the field on passing downs he could find himself planted on the bench. Barring an unexpected development, his one year, $4 million contract will be considered a waste.

Patriots DE Shaun Ellis could miss this week's game against the Giants after suffering bruised ribs in Week 8. The injury isn't expected to keep him out beyond this week. Brandon Deaderick, who made his 2011 debut last week, is expected to see an increased role.

Patriots DE Shaun Ellis was forced from Sunday's game against the Steelers with a ribs injury, and is questionable to return. Ellis has been taken to the locker room. Brandon Deaderick, who is making his 2011 debut today, is filling in along the Patriots' defensive line.

Shaun Ellis will earn $4 million on his one-year deal with the Patriots and can make another $1 million in incentives. According to ESPN's John Clayton, the Jets offered Ellis just $910,000 on a one-year deal. The contract shows that Ellis is a strong bet to win a starting job in New England despite impressive depth at defensive end. It's also yet another sign that the Patriots are going to play more of a 4-3 scheme on defense this season.

Patriots agreed to terms with DE Shaun Ellis, formerly of the Jets. Offered the veteran's minimum by the Jets, it's unclear if Ellis' Patriots contract includes any guaranteed money. Ellis had clearly lost a step last season, but as evidenced by his monster playoff performance against the team he is now joining, he can still be a productive player. He's an excellent depth signing for what should be an improved Patriots' defensive line.

The Patriots worked out free agent DE Shaun Ellis on Thursday. The Jets have a contract offer out to Ellis, but he's likely trying to secure some guaranteed money. We doubt the Patriots will buck up at what's suddenly become one of their deepest positions. Ellis could play more snaps in New York.

The Jets have offered free agent DE Shaun Ellis a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum. That would be $910,000. Ellis' agent says the 11-year veteran is "weighing options." Entering his age-34 season, Ellis would provide the Jets with some valuable insurance along the defensive line if rookie Muhammad Wilkerson isn't ready to go.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum has been in touch with free agent DE Shaun Ellis since the lockout ended. "I talked to Shaun the other day; had a great talk with him," Tannenbaum said. "He's assessing his options. And he's the longest-tenured Jet, that means a lot to me. We'll see what happens." The Jets likely want to fast-track rookie Muhammad Wilkerson into the starting lineup, so Ellis might only be a backup.
