Garza (ankle) is out for Sunday's game against San Francisco. Garza's dealing with a high ankle sprain, which is typically a multi-week injury, so he might miss time beyond Sunday, too.

Garza suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's Week 1 loss to the Bills, Michael C. Wright of ESPN.com reports. It's not certain if Garza will have to miss time as a result of the injury, but the nature of the ailment -- along with the fact that the center failed to return after exiting in the second quarter -- doesn't seem to bode particularly well. The Bears also lost starting guard Matt Slauson to an ankle injury Sunday, which could hamper the team's ground game if both players fail to return to action in Week 2 against the 49ers.

Bears re-signed C Roberto Garza to a one-year. $1.5 million contract. Garza, 34, has been with the Bears since 2005. He's started all 16 games in each of the last three seasons, grading out as PFF's No. 12 center among 35 qualifiers a year ago. The major leap forward the Bears offensive line took last season will be intact.

Coach Marc Trestman confirmed at the Combine that the Bears want to re-sign free agent C Roberto Garza. "We feel like he should finish his career with the Bears," said Trestman. Garza turns 35 next month, but is still playing at a high enough level to start one more year in Chicago. Garza should be affordable for the Bears to retain.

The Bears intend on keeping Roberto Garza at center in 2013. Arguably Chicago's best offensive lineman over the past several seasons, Garza has ranked near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' rankings at center. Protecting Jay Cutler remains an issue in Chicago, and Bears beat writers wouldn't be surprised if Garza is eventually moved to guard in an effort to get the best players on the field. The draft will likely determine where he lines up in 2013.

Bears C Roberto Garza triggered an escalator in his contract, raising his 2013 salary from $1.75 million to $2.05 million. Garza, 33, has missed just two starts over the last seven seasons. Although he's been the model of consistency, Garza has been near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' annual center rankings over the last couple seasons. He has one year left on his deal.
