Retired RB Ricky Williams will reportedly join the staff at University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio to help coach running backs. UIW is making the transition to Division I athletics this year, joining the FCS as an Independent before becoming part of the Southland conference in 2014. Williams grew up in San Diego, but he went to school at the University of Texas. It's a nice opportunity for him to get his feet wet as a coach.

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports that the Chargers "have not had any discussions" with retired RB Ricky Williams. Williams recently told a radio show that he'd come out of retirement if the Chargers had a mutual interest, but there has been no thought of that in San Diego. "The only way right now I would come back is if the Chargers called me," Williams said Wednesday. "It would be hard to turn San Diego down."

Former Ravens RB Ricky Williams confirmed that he has filed his NFL retirement papers, but would consider playing for the Chargers in 2012. Williams was placed on reserve/retired on March 2 and remains property of the Ravens. In order to make a comeback, Williams would need Baltimore to release him from his contract. He's under the Ravens' control through 2012.

Ravens placed RB Ricky Williams on the reserve/retired list. The move allows the Ravens to retain Williams' rights should he reconsider a return to football. He is under contract for 2012, although Baltimore gets to take his $1.5 million base pay and $50,000 workout bonus off its salary cap. Coach John Harbaugh expressed skepticism before the Combine that Williams would reverse his decision, but you can't rule out anything with Ricky.

Coach John Harbaugh is no longer confident that Ricky Williams will reverse his decision on retirement to re-join the Ravens for the 2012 season. "I have to admit, I was very supportive of him on whichever way he wanted to go," said Harbaugh, "but I felt like he'd call me back in a day or two and he'd change his mind because that's a big decision. But he didn't, he was very firm on it." Speculation has the Ravens considering a reunion with Le'Ron McClain as a backup tailback and fullback.

According to the Baltimore Sun, finding a new backup running back to replace the retired Ricky Williams "doesn't appear to be very high" on the Ravens' to-do list. Beat writer Jeff Zrebiec takes it as a sign that the Ravens might believe Williams will ultimately play next season. Just eight days before his abrupt retirement, Williams told Ravens.com he was "excited" about 2012. It's well within the realm of possibility Williams will un-retire for the second time during his weird and winding NFL career.

Ricky Williams readily acknowledges that his retirement might not be final. "The easy answer is I've moved on," said Williams, "but the one thing I've learned about myself is, 'Who the hell knows?'" It's hardly rare for a veteran coming off a playoff loss to lean toward retirement only to reverse course in July or August. Williams' retirement may be due in large part to a text from Bill Parcells reading, "Don't chase this thing too long. You can contribute in other ways."

Ricky Williams has reportedly informed Ravens officials that he will retire after 11 NFL seasons. The Ravens would have welcomed him back at age 35, and Profootballtalk reports "there's a feeling he could return later in the offseason." Williams' colorful career has been one given to whims, so it would hardly be a surprise if he reverses the decision down the road. A dichotomy in shoulder pads, Williams' bruising, take-no-prisoners running style was offset by a softer, soul-searching side rarely seen among high-profile NFL stars. If this is truly the end, Williams finishes with 10,009 rushing yards, 2,606 receiving yards, and 74 TDs. A first-team All Pro in 2002, Williams is one of 26 backs in history to reach 10,000 yards.

Ricky Williams told Ravens.com that he plans to play a 12th season in 2012. "My body feels good and I know I'm going to train hard and so I'm excited about next year," said Williams, who turns 35 in May. "... I'm not so surprised I've played this long, but I am surprised at how good I feel." The Ravens will eventually need to begin thinking about a better long-term No. 2 back behind Ray Rice, but Williams can hold down the fort for one more season.

Ricky Williams rushed six times for 22 yards in the Ravens' AFC Championship Game loss to New England. Williams was an effective change-of-pace back throughout the season and chipped in a robust 49 postseason yards on 12 carries (4.08 YPC) while spelling Ray Rice. Ricky turns 35 in May, but is still playing at a high enough level that the Ravens figure to bring him back at his $1.5 million base salary.
