The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports free agent RT Mike Johnson and the Atlanta Falcons are in "active talks" over a new contract. Johnson looked set to be the starting right tackle in Atlanta in 2013 before dislocating his left ankle and fracturing his fibula early in training camp. The 26-year-old Johnson figures to command only one-year offers with little or nothing guaranteed.

Falcons placed RT Mike Johnson on injured reserve with a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula, ending his season. Johnson suffered the gruesome injury in Tuesday's practice, and he'll undergo surgery next week. He was the leading candidate to replace Tyson Clabo at right tackle, but Lamar Holmes and Ryan Schraeder will now compete for the job. Johnson faces a grueling rehab, and he'll be a free agent after the season.

A league source confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter that Falcons RT Mike Johnson's left ankle dislocation and fibula fracture is season ending. He'll have surgery next week. The injury occurred during Atlanta's intersquad practice with the Bengals, which will be featured on next week's Hard Knocks. Lamar Holmes and UDFA Ryan Schraeder are next up on the Falcons' depth chart at right tackle. The position is up for grabs after Tyson Clabo's release.

Mike Johnson has been working as the first-team right tackle at OTAs. In the battle to replace Tyson Clabo, Johnson has his nose in front of Lamar Holmes. Perhaps the Falcons prefer the more efficient pass blocker over the heavier, mauling Holmes. The competition will continue into training camp.

Fox Sports South thinks Mike Johnson "could be the favorite" to start at right tackle for the Falcons this season. This directly contradicts the Falcons' official site, which opined that second-year pro Lamar Holmes is "penciled in" on the right side after Tyson Clabo's release. Johnson and Holmes are different players. Holmes is more of a mauler, while Johnson is lighter on his feet at 304 pounds. Neither will be handed the job.

Falcons OL Mike Johnson's base salary will be up from $575,000 to $630,000 in 2013 after he hit escalators in his rookie contract. Johnson played in 17 games as the Falcons' swing tackle in 2012 with Will Svitek spending the season on injured reserve. Svitek and LT Sam Baker are set for free agency this offseason, so Johnson, a 2010 third-rounder, could be asked to take on an even larger role in his fourth season.
