Egnew was claimed off waivers by the Lions on Monday, USA Today reports. Egnew was waived by the Dolphins over the weekend in light of Charles Clay and Dion Sims firmly occupying the team's top two tight end positions. However, even with Brandon Pettigrew, Joseph Fauria, and rookie first-rounder Eric Ebron already in Detroit, the Lions decided to sign the 2012 third-rounder Egnew to add another option at tight end.

Egnew will be cut by the Dolphins, the Miami Herald reports. Given that Egnew was a third-round draft pick in 2012, he figures to catch on elsewhere, with his departure paving the way for Arthur Lynch, Gator Hoskins, Brett Brackett, Kyle Miller and Evan Wilson to jostle for TE slotting in Miami behind top options Charles Clay and Dion Sims.

Egnew (concussion) returned to practice Sunday, Omar Kelly of the South-Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. The report suggests that Egnew -- currently listed as Miami's No. 3 TE -- will need to look sharp moving forward in order to cement a roster spot with the team.

Egnew (concussion) missed practice Tuesday, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. Egnew at the very least is expected to miss several days worth of practice but as we all should know with concussions there really can be no timetable for a return to action.

Egnew may have suffered a concussion during practice Monday, according to the Miami Herald. The Dolphins are woefully thin at TE right now. Egnew will undergo a concussion test to determine how long he may be out for. Egnew is ticketed to begin the season as the backup to Charles Clay.

Dolphins OC Bill Lazor is using third-year TE Michael Egnew out wide and off the line more than ex-OC Mike Sherman. Egnew has played just 255 snaps since being the 78th overall pick in the 2012 draft, and he was asked to block on half of them. Egnew was more receiver than tight end in Mizzou's spread offense in college. Getting him out in the slot and away from linemen and linebackers is the best idea. Egnew is competing for a roster spot this summer. Lazor at least seems to know his players' strengths.

The Miami Herald expects third-year TE Michael Egnew to be on the roster bubble in training camp. Reporter Barry Jackson anticipates the Fins adding "at least two tight ends" to push for Egnew's job. The 78th overall pick in the 2012 draft, Egnew has seven catches through two NFL seasons, and has predictably struggled mightily as a run blocker. He's also off scholarship under Miami's new general manager.

Coach Joe Philbin says second-year TE Michael Egnew "really improved an awful lot" this summer. Egnew had nowhere to go but up. So while it's nice to hear he's getting better, he really didn't have much of a choice. "He's a guy we're excited about," continued Philbin. Egnew is no higher than the No. 4 tight end on the depth chart, and he's going to struggle to find playing time this season.

Dolphins OC Mike Sherman said second-year TE Michael Egnew has made "drastic improvement from a year ago." "He's a lot more physical," Sherman said. "His blocking has really improved. Still has to show more consistency. His peaks and valleys aren't quite as [dramatic]." Egnew is still far too inconsistent, and he's no higher than the No. 4 tight end on the depth chart. He's going to have to impress in the preseason.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald does not expect TE Michael Egnew to make the Dolphins' final roster. The much maligned Egnew is already off to a rough start at training camp. He opened up with the third- and fourth-stringers and fumbled on Tuesday. The Dolphins may end up just cutting their losses on the 2012 third-rounder; they're already giving rookie Dion Sims a few reps with the starters.
