Lattimore (knee) has informed the 49ers that he plans to retire, the team's official site reports. Serious knee issues derailed the 2013 fourth-rounder's career, with Lattimore relaying in a statement Wednesday that getting his knee "fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable," the San Jose Mercury News reports. With Lattimore no longer a candidate to join the 49ers' backfield, Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde remain the team's top two options at the running back position.

Lattimore is expected to announce his retirement due to ongoing knee issues, ESPN reports. Lattimore's knee problems date back to college, and while the 49ers used a fourth-round pick on him in the 2013 draft, only months after tearing every ligament in his right knee and dislocating his knee cap, he has yet to play a single game for the team after spending the entire 2013 season on the non-football injury list. He has returned to practice recently, albeit in a very limited basis since he is still on the non-football injury list, and with no clear plan to get back on the field, Lattimore appears to have come to the conclusion that he will end his playing career and focus on life after football.

Lattimore (knee) is unlikely to play this season, according to CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco. Lattimore made it through two practices last week, but he reported soreness in his knee Friday, which could signal the end of his hopes of playing this season. The 49ers have until Nov. 18 to decide whether to activate him.

Lattimore's status is up in the air after he reported soreness in his right knee and was held out of Friday's practice, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reports. He remains on the team's non-football injury list, but had two days of practice earlier in the week, which were believed to be the most strenuous football activity he has had since he tore three knee ligaments in October 2012. Since Lattimore began practicing Wednesday, the team must decide by Nov. 18 whether they will place him on the 53-man roster, release him or keep him on NFI for the rest of the season.

Lattimore (knee) will return to practice Wednesday, the Sacramento Bee reports. Lattimore will return to the field almost exactly two years to the day from the horrific knee injury that ended his college career at the University of South Carolina. Widely regarded as a first-round talent, Lattimore slipped to the fourth round, where he was selected by San Francisco. He's been on the non-football injury list since being drafted, but he'll now have a chance to work himself into the team's backfield rotation. "I've been watching off to the side, and I'm excited to watch him play football again," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "You saw some of it in the offseason, but I think he's further ahead from where he was, two, three, four months ago, and (I'm) excited to see that progress on the field. I'm looking forward to it." The Niners will have a 21-day window in which to evaluate Lattimore's condition. If he proves ready to contribute, he'll be added to the 53-man roster and likely slide in as the third back behind Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde. If not, the team will be required to shut him down for the remainder of the season.

Lattimore (knee) is expected to return to practice following the 49ers' Week 8 bye, the Sacramento Bee reports. The coaching staff reportedly believes Lattimore is ready to test his surgically-repaired knee, but the team will wait to return him to practice until after the bye, as to delay the 21-day window for deciding whether or not to activate him from the non-football injury list. If all goes well upon his return to practice, Lattimore could join the active roster by mid-November, but it's hard to imagine him leaping Frank Gore or Carlos Hyde on the depth chart this season.

Lattimore (knee) has been placed on the non-football injury list, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports. Lattimore will receive this designation for the second straight season, and won't be eligible to return to the field until Week 7. His prolonged recovery from a brutal 2012 knee injury will extend even further, as Lattimore won't see his first career NFL snap until nearly the mid-way point of 2014.

Lattimore is a likely candidate to be placed on the non-football injury list for the second consecutive season, CSN Bay Area reports. Lattimore (knee) seemed to be progressing well during mini-camp, but he was shut down for training camp. If he does indeed begin the year on the NFI list, then he wouldn't be eligible to return to the field until week 7. Either way, Lattimore's recovery from a gruesome 2012 knee injury isn't going as smoothly as the 49ers had thought when they drafted him with a fourth round pick in the 2013 draft.

Coach Jim Harbaugh stated that he received a "good report" on Lattimore from those in charge of his rehabilitation, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports. Lattimore (knee/hamstring) still hasn't returned to practice and does not have a timetable for his return. However, he has been vamping up his rehab routine which includes sprinting, cutting, broad-jumping, and working with a medicine ball. The 49ers have taken a hit in the running back department this offseason, so having a healthy Lattimore would be very beneficial, but the team appears to be a taking a cautious approach with their 2013 fourth-round pick.

Lattimore (knee/hamstring) is still absent from training camp and is now in jeopardy of starting the season on the non-football injury list, the Sacramento Bee reports. Lattimore was expected to come back healthy in 2014, but his knee hasn't fully healed and the hamstring injury he sustained in mini-camp is still lingering. The team hasn't issued an update on his status, and it is starting to look like the former fourth-round pick will not be ready for the start of the season.
