The Washington Post considers Madieu Williams the early favorite for the Redskins' free safety job. Brandon Meriweather is locked in at strong safety, with Reed Doughty behind him. Williams has reportedly received the bulk of the early first-team free safety reps at OTAs, ahead of Tanard Jackson and DeJon Gomes. Jackson has the best talent of the bunch and could give Williams a stronger run in training camp.

Redskins agreed to terms with S Madieu Williams, formerly of the 49ers. The former Maryland star chose to play close to home over joining a better team in the Falcons. Williams is likely slated to compete with 2011 fifth-rounder DeJon Gomes for the starting free safety job. Without special teams value, the 30-year-old could be released before the start of the season if he doesn't win out in camp.

The player rep for free agent S Madieu Williams confirms he is deciding between the Falcons and Redskins. He visited Atlanta on Monday after checking in with Washington last week. A part-time player during his age-30 campaign in 2011, he won't be signed to start.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee is "hearing" free agent S Madieu Williams will sign with either the Falcons or Redskins shortly. Williams left Washington without a deal in place late last week. He had another undisclosed visit set for Monday, and the tea leaves now suggest it was with Atlanta. Williams would be a reserve/role player in either locale.

Free agent S Madieu Williams left Washington without a contract in place Friday and has another visit lined up for Monday. Williams must not have loved the offer, or else he would be a Redskin by now. The team he plans to visit Monday is undisclosed. Once regarded amongst the league's top free safeties, Williams' NFL stock has fallen dramatically over the past couple years. He's likely looking at veteran minimum deals.

Free agent S Madieu Williams is reportedly visiting the Redskins on Friday. The 30-year-old former Maryland star will have trouble earning a roster this season after registering just nine tackles in 15 games with the 49ers last season. He brings no special teams value.

The Sacramento Bee only expects the 49ers to re-sign free agent S Madieu Williams "at the right price." Locking up free agent FS Dashon Goldson is expected to be one of the Niners' top priorities, and Williams proved to be expendable during his age-30 season, making just nine tackles in 15 games. If he's re-signed, it will be on the cheap and as a strict reserve.

The 49ers will start Madieu Williams at free safety in Week 1 against the Seahawks. It's interesting to note that Williams played with Seattle OC Darrell Bevell and starting QB Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota for the past several seasons. Williams is replacing Dashon Goldson, who'll miss the game with a knee injury. Reggie Smith likely would've gotten the nod if not for a bad knee of his own.

49ers agreed to terms with S Madieu Williams on a one-year contract. Last we heard, the Niners were battling the Raiders for FS Dashon Goldson. It's not clear if the Williams signing is a hedge against Goldson leaving or merely for depth. Williams' effectiveness has waned since a 2008 neck injury, and he has just one interception in his last 29 starts.

Vikings released S Madieu Williams. So much for the idea that the short offseason would protect veterans with bloated salaries. Coach Leslie Frazier wanted to keep Williams around, but his play hasn't matched his scheduled $5.5 million salary. The Vikings will clear $3.5 million in cap space with the move.
