Fantasy 411 - Week 6 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/8/13 6:00 AM

Chris Johnson took to Twitter last week and reminded impatient fantasy owners that he didn't ask them to draft him. Five games in to the season, fantasy owners are echoing that regret. Johnson's final numbers on Sunday against the Chiefs were salvaged thanks to a 49-yard touchdown reception where he snatched the ball from a scrambling Ryan Fitzpatrick and rumbled down the field for his first score of the season. Johnson owners who are hoping to hear that this is an indication of good things to come will be slightly disappointed to hear me say...Not yet. The dynamic run illustrates what Johnson is capable of, but the upcoming schedule is stacked against him and the Titans. With upcoming games against Seattle and San Francisco before the bye week, Johnson may be throttled for a few more weeks. However, following their bye in week eight the Titans draw several favorable matchups that should help Johnson get on track. If Johnson takes a few lumps in the coming weeks, take advantage and make a trade offer to his frustrated owner. No doubt Alshon Jeffery will be talked about quite a bit this week in fantasy circles. A week after eclipsing 100-yards and hauling in a touchdown catch, Jeffery outdid himself, setting a franchise receiving record of 218 yards on ten catches and a touchdown. For the third straight week, Brandon Marshall turned in a subpar effort, only reeling in four catches on five targets. Recently teams seem intent on taking Marshall out of the game and seeing if the Bears can beat them with other weapons. Could this signal a changing of the guard? Nope! I would actually argue the opposite. The emergence of Jeffery as a dependable target for Jay Cutler will mean that teams can no longer key solely on Marshall. A boune back seems in order in this week's battle with the hapless Giants and their depleted secondary. Cowboy's rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams has shown promise in limited action leading up to his breakout performance Sunday in the 51-48 loss to the Broncos. While eighty-two of his 151 yards came on his touchdown where he showcased his blazing speed scampering to the end zone. The Cowboys have a potent offense and are comfortable in shootouts, as evidenced by their nail biter with the Broncos. Williams has been able to find his way on to the field for more plays as result of a hamstring injury to Miles Austin. Stop me if you have heard that one before! Austin has a history of lingering injuries that have kept him ...

The Feeding Frenzy: Looking Back, Looking Ahead fantasysharks.com Tue 12/18/12 12:30 PM1 Comment

The 2012 fantasy season has come to an end for me. I'll be traveling next week for the holidays, so this is my final column of the year. I want to thank all of you who stopped by and read my advice on trading players this season. I hope you found some of my inane babbling useful. In the final edition of The Feeding Frenzy, I will take a look back and a look ahead to 2013. First, I will look at the players I think were the Top 5 waiver wire pickups of the season. Now I know in some leagues a couple of these players may have been drafted, but the fact is if you go back to August and look at the information available, they weren't being selected in a majority of drafts. Finally, I'll look ahead to next season and five players I'm high on for 2013. Obviously things change, but these are five guys that as of right now are high on my fantasy radar for next year. So if you're still playing in your fantasy championship games, I wish you luck. I also hope everyone has a great holiday season. As for me, if this is the end of the line, I'll see you all in the funny papers. Here are my five top waiver wire pickups from the 2012 season: Russell Wilson, QB, Seattle -- Wilson was expected to be a game manager in his first year as a starter in the NFL. He was anything but that as Wilson has eclipsed 20 fantasy points in seven of 14 fantasy starts this season. Wilson has gotten better as the year has gone on too, averaging 25 fantasy points since Week 8. Through 14 games, Wilson has outscored bigger name quarterbacks such as Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers. For those who believe you shouldn't use a high draft pick on a quarterback, Wilson adds more fodder to their argument. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver -- Moreno was a late addition to fantasy teams, but if you were fortunate enough to get him, it has paid off. Since Moreno started against Kansas City four weeks ago, he has averaged 19 points in points per reception formats. Even more importantly, Moreno has done most of his damage during fantasy playoffs, rushing for 237 yards and two scores over the last two weeks. Moreno may not be done yet. He gets the Cleveland Browns and their 18th ranked rush defense in Week 16. I said to sell Moreno after his first start. I was dead wrong. Peyton Manning got me again. First Joseph Addai, now Moreno. James Jones, WR, Green Bay -- There were talks of Jones being traded during the summer, but, rather than leaving Green Bay, Jones...

What Did We Learn - Week 12 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/27/12 4:00 AM

Andre Johnson went off again. Johnson followed up last week's dominant performance against Jacksonville with another big game, catching nine balls for 188 yards. That makes 23 receptions, 461 yards, and a touchdown in the past two weeks. He's clearly healthy, and the Houston running game provides enough of a threat to keep opposing defenses honest. Matt Schaub will continue to look for him going forward, and I anticipate we'll see Johnson maintain his current production, provided he can stay healthy. The Washington offense is better than advertised. Robert Griffin III started off strong, but seemed to fade for a few weeks there. In the past two weeks, he's thrown for 511 yards, eight touchdowns, and just one interception, while running for another 113 yards. Add to that fellow rookie running back Alfred Morris and his stunning rookie campaign, and there's a youth movement in Washington. Santana Moss has returned to fantasy relevance, and Pierre Garcon is finally getting healthy. Add to it the raw speed of another rookie, Aldrick Robinson, and the Redskins offense is shaping up midseason. The Redskins will end up playing spoiler in the NFL over the next few weeks, and Griffin III and company will provide a similar boost to fantasy teams. Michael Bush may take over for an injured Matt Forte. Forte and Bush have combined to be a decent running back this season. But Forte has been slowed by injuries and Bush has vultured touchdowns. Bush is stuck, once again, behind a more talented, but injury-prone back. On Sunday, Forte ran for 42 yards on 14 carries before re-injuring an ankle, forcing Bush into the lead role once again. Bush ran 21 times for 60 yards and a pair of short touchdowns on the day. He's more than capable of carrying the load, and he'll be a volume play with touchdown potential going forward, but don't expect big rushing totals. Andy Dalton is a fringe QB1. This is tough for me, because I'm not a huge Dalton believer, but his numbers have been really good lately. On Sunday, against an admittedly poor Oakland defense, he threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns. In his last three games, he has 639 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions. While A.J. Green didn't score for the first time since Week 1, Dalton spread the ball around effectively. He's no Tom Brady or Drew Brees, but Dalton is a decent alternative if your starter has a tough matchup. Knowshon Moreno is back on the fantasy map. Moreno hadn't been active for a single game this ...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 11 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/13/12 5:00 AM

Our top category comes back, and rightly so as we have a player that will have an immediate fantasy impact as both a short- and long-term solution. Despite the fact that three starting quarterbacks went down with a concussion, their backups all played so poorly that none are worth considering in any format. Wide receivers and running backs carry the day in this week's edition, though we do reach deep in our effort to list at least one tight end. There's something for everyone this week! Smokin' Hot WR Danario Alexander, San Diego Alexander was slated to split time with Robert Meachem as the starter opposite Malcom Floyd this past week. Just over a minute into the game against Tampa Bay, he got his hands on a slant pass and 80 yards later he was in the end zone. More importantly, the coaching staff had seen enough to keep him on the field for nearly every one of the Chargers' offensive plays. He finished the day with five catches good for 134 yards and the one touchdown, which clearly moves him ahead of Meachem as the starter for San Diego. Even though the Chargers have difficult matchups against Denver and Baltimore, look for Alexander to be an integral part of the San Diego passing game and he should be owned in all formats. Solid Pickups RB Chris Ivory, New Orleans We talked about Ivory last week, and his performance against the Atlanta Falcons backed up the high praise that we heaped upon him. With Darren Sproles likely to miss at least another game or two, we continue to like Ivory as a waiver wire pickup that can provide help at the running back position. The return of Sproles will put a damper on Ivory's playing time, but until that happens Ivory is worth a look in all formats. He backed up a 10-carry 48-yard performance two weeks ago by rushing seven times for 72 yards against the Falcons while scoring a touchdown for the second week in a row. He is only owned in 30 percent of online leagues, numbers that are sure to rise as running backs that touch the ball 5-10 times per game are a rare find on the waiver wire. Our friends at fleaflicker.com have him as one of the top adds this week, so get him while you can. WR Laurent Robinson, Jacksonville The Jaguars have adapted their offense since losing Maurice Jones-Drew to injury, with the realization that Rashad Jennings cannot carry the same load. The Jaguars offense is relying more on the passing game, frequently going with three wide receivers on the field. The ...

A relatively healthy week for key fantasy players, so we are setting aside the top category for this week. Nothing terribly exciting, but we do have a handful of players that should be on fantasy rosters. We also talk about several backup running backs that are also worth consideration for pickup. A little something for everyone this week! Solid Pickups WR Ryan Broyles, Detroit We were able to squeeze Broyles into last week's listing in the bottom category, as the extent of Nate Burleson's injury during the Lions Monday night game was not known by the time we had to go to press. With Burleson gone for the season, Broyles now assumes full time duty in the slot for Detroit. This will get him on the field for right around 50% of the offensive plays. He caught a touchdown pass in the Monday night contest, as well as in this past week's game. Only six catches in total over the two games, so we're not ready to recommend that you plug him intoyour starting lineup, but he should be owned in all formats. WR Cecil Shorts, Jacksonville Moving up one category from last week, Shorts warrants another mention this week as he is still available in more than 75% of online leagues. After a week seven performance that had him go for 79 yards on four catches and a touchdown, he doubled is catches, hauling in eight passes for 116 yards. He is Blaine Gabbert's top option, and his numbers will not be affected when Laurent Robinson returns from injury. He is a very solid pickup this week, worth owning in all formats. RB Daniel Thomas, Miami The Dolphins have made Thomas the goal line back, and he's starting to assert himself even beyond that role. He punched in one short yardage carry for a touchdown on a day where he totaled 15 carries. Reggie Bush was ineffective, and was the recipient of only 14 carries on the day. This is not a sign that Bush is being phased out, but it is a clear indication that Miami is going to be looking to split thingsdown the middle, with Thomas getting the edge at the goal line. RB Joique Bell, Detroit Mikel Leshoure has battled injury for most of the season, and this week he struggled to make it through the game, sitting out most of the fourth quarter in favor of Bell. There is no indication that Leshoure has an injury that will keep him out of the lineup, however, with all the action that Bell has beengettingits giving him and the coaching staff more confidence in his ability to handle a larger role. For now, he remains the ...

Draft day is the most exciting day in fantasy football as everyone has done countless hours of research and mock drafts believing that their hard work will pay off in the form of a championship. However, as is often the case, strategies do not always go according to plan. One of the main reasons for such predicaments is fantasy "busts." A "bust" is defined as a player who is predicted to have a poor season compared to expectations, and, as a result, could be from a player being injury-prone, having a future star behind him on the depth chart, or a player who just will not be able to live up to the hype. The game of fantasy football is all about minimizing risk as no apparent pick is safe. Let us delve into the "busts" for the 2012 fantasy football season. The Average Draft Position (ADP) is courtesy of myfantasyleague.com Quarterbacks Drew Brees (ADP = 14.73) -- Getting Brees in the second round might sound like a bargain to some since he had a record-breaking year in which he threw for a record 5,476 passing yards and broke the mark of 5,084 passing yards set by Dan Marino, but the absence of coach Sean Payton will prove to be a big one to Brees and the New Orleans Saints organization. Additionally, consider the fact that regression is expected as Brees threw for 407 more yards than his previous career high of 5,069 yards, which occurred in 2008, and the fact that Brees threw for 12 more touchdowns (46) in comparison with the 34 he threw in both 2008 and 2009. Matthew Stafford (ADP = 16.96) -- Before last season, Stafford had started only 13 games in two years and there were questions about his durability over a 16-game NFL season. Be that as it may, Stafford rewarded fantasy owners who bought into the hype of the Detroit Lions' field general being a "sleeper" candidate last season as he threw for 5,038 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. As high-powered as the Lions offense has become, an integral part of Stafford 's success was very much predicated on the behalf of the top wide receiver, Calvin Johnson . Unfortunately, Johnson was voted onto the Madden Cover after a monster season, and the curse -- as silly as it sounds -- is quite frightening in its implications of players who underachieve or are injured. If Stafford 's top target underperforms or gets injured with the curse befallen on him, the Georgia product will have a dip in numbers. Along those lines, Stafford has durability issues of his own, which make him a risky selection...

The Slot Machine fantasysharks.com Tue 6/5/12 4:45 AM

Jordy Nelson, Victor Cruz, Eric Decker, Lance Moore, Laurent Robinson, James Jones. All were slot receivers in some shape or form last season. None of these players caught less than seven touchdowns, either. Nelson went bonkers with Aaron Rodgers at the helm; add an injured Donald Driver to the mix and he easily stole the show in Green Bay with Jones reaping the benefits from Driver's absence as well. Cruz, the true coming out of nowhere underdog story, had a careers worth of highlights in one season. Decker (I had him pegged as a breakout guy in an article last year) worked his way up the depth chart with relative ease as his overall talent shone through. Moore, a true slot guy, continued to be a favorite redzone threat for Drew Brees when he was healthy. Robinson, an injury-plagued talent, was finally able to stay healthy for a season and ran with his chance when injury problems sprang up for the Dallas Cowboys. The trio of Decker, Moore and Jones didn't put up the kind of yardage totals the other three were able to, but they still found the endzone at a high rate. This article isn't about these players, though, it's about this year's potential crop of slot guys ready to take the same step in fantasy land, at least for this season. Drafting these slot receivers at the tail end of drafts requires little-to-no risk, and the potential upside could not only anchor your wide receiver corps, but provide a trading piece to strengthen a weak area of your team down the line. Like Peter Stormare said in Armageddon, "Good odds, ya know?" Andre Caldwell, Denver -- Spending his first four seasons in Cincinnati, Caldwell has shown small flashes, and while overall he hasn't been bad, he hasn't exactly been good either. A healthy Peyton Manning could probably put David Terrell back on the map, so imagine the possibilities with Caldwell. It's no secret Manning loves to use the slot. A fresh start with a future Hall of Famer and Super Bowl-winning quarterback sounds like something I might be interested in. I'm sure Caldwell feels the same way. It may take some time for the entire wide receiver corps to get on the same page as Manning and for the unit to get their timing down, but there are going to be plenty of balls flying around in Denver this season. As long as Manning stays healthy, everyone will get some. Caldwell provides the best low-risk/high-reward investment in this year's draft out of the crop of slot receivers. Eddie Royal, San Diego -- We have seen Royal...

2012 Conference Championships: Turnovers and Tight Ends fantasysharks.com Sat 1/21/12 1:06 AM

Welcome to the Conference Championship edition of the Brew Crew Corner. Two games this week will decide who will go to the Super Bowl. Last weekend it was turnovers that sunk three teams while tight ends decided some other games. The Houston Texans threw three interceptions and a lost a fumble, the New Orleans Saints threw two interceptions and lost three fumbles, while the Green Bay Packers had one interception and lost three fumbles in their loss. Not taking care of the football gave the other teams additional opportunities, and it cost these three teams dearly. I've never seen a year where we've had so many stud tight ends playing in the playoffs, and last weekend we saw four tight ends dominate in games. For the New England Patriots, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez destroyed the Denver Broncos. Gronkowski had 145 yards and three touchdowns while Hernandez had four receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown, and he added five carries for 55 yards. In San Francisco, Vernon Davis had seven catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns as he out performed Jimmy Graham, who had five receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Tight ends will definitely be a factor in the Conference Championship games. Look for Jake Ballard and even Dennis Pitta to have key grabs this weekend. Last week we analyzed the value of the running backs for 2011. This week we will look at the wide receivers for this season.
